My Ford Edge should have been dead 200,000 miles ago for running HDEO 15w-40 oil in it since it was new. Has 250,000 on it now. Was supposed to have 5w-20 in it all theses years.. I just don't tell it that it has it in it. It is amazing what marketing can do.

On my 08 Edge I finally change my PTU fluid at 200,000 miles just to see what it was like. I had to drill and tap it so I could drain it. Looked black but didn't smell burnt. I just filled it with 80-90 Valvoline.. Its got 235,000 on it now. No problems yet.

This whole PTU problem is blown way out of proportion. The failure rate is pretty low. If it was caused by heat from the exhaust it would be almost all of them.

I don't think that any engine with a slightly plugged oil passage would live very long. And I can't see how a oil passage would ever get plugged in the first place.

The original owner may not face replacing it. But what is the resale going to be on the trucks in about 5 to 6 years when the next buyer knows he is going to have to do it. Or the dealer that is going to price that procedure into the trade value.

The only way to know the real friction differences would be on a engine dyno for long runs. It would be the only way to keep the variables the same. Your test is a good thought but has no verifiable results that could be replicated
