Looking to buy a '24 BRZ or Toyota GR 86.

The new FA engines are not too bad in terms of reliability, EJ engines were horrible and I think that's why Subaru has a bad reputation (especially head gaskets) As long as you follow maintenance guidelines, you should have no issues with the latest VWs. The only thing that can go wrong with...

Japanese-made compact FWD SUV, no CVT?

First time I've seen someone opting for an FWD because an AWD is considered a maintenance hassle, especially considering SUVs are meant to have an AWD, otherwise they would have been described as raised hatchbacks instead of a "utility" vehicle. Why would you be worried about something that may...

Looking to buy a '24 BRZ or Toyota GR 86.

The BRZ/MX-5 shouldn't have been offered in automatic, and WRX shouldn't have a CVT. Those are the biggest 3 insults for car enthusiasts. If you have to get an automatic, get the GTI, at least it fits better to the vehicle's character, and DSG is faster than a stick shift.

2021 VW GLI - Track Day (Open Lapping) at TMP

Depending on your suspension setup, mine isn't too bad. If you have a DCC, Comfort mode with the current setup (19" wheels and lowering springs) feels like a Sport mode when everything was OEM. With 18" wheels (just lowering springs), Comfort mode with the current setup felt like a Normal mode...

2021 VW GLI - Track Day (Open Lapping) at TMP

Thanks! I kept the front sway bar stock but stiffened up the rear as I wanted to get a better turn-in response, especially GLI has a longer wheelbase than the GTI, it helps a lot. For an FWD that's what I'd do, add an aftermarket rear sway bar, and add negative camber to the front for more...

2021 VW GLI - Track Day (Open Lapping) at TMP

I can assure you it's not a slushbox. BMW has the best TCU tune for the ZF-8 in the industry. It feels just as quick as a DCT. (I drove both gen M3s), not to mention the ZF-8 feels much smoother when you drive normally, giving you the best of both worlds. It can also handle tons of power, lots...

2021 VW GLI - Track Day (Open Lapping) at TMP

I've had 30 hours on track (with a lot of tight turns and braking, not a high-speed track), and 8000 miles in total, mostly spirited miles on public roads especially at turns. No issues so far. Yes, it's recommended for lowered cars, mine is not slammed but around 1 inch lower than the stock...

2021 VW GLI - Track Day (Open Lapping) at TMP

This was my first VW and switched from Honda, so I had to be a little bit cautious lol I'll keep an eye on tune deals (Black Friday etc.), if I do it I'll do it for both ECU and TCU.

2021 VW GLI - Track Day (Open Lapping) at TMP

That's also true, but I have only put 11000 miles so far in the last 2.5 years. The total mileage should be less than 20k in the next 2 years, much less than average. If I was putting 20k miles a year, I wouldn't have waited 5 years.

2021 VW GLI - Track Day (Open Lapping) at TMP

Thanks, the FL5 shifter and the seats are really good. I want to buy the new Type-R for MSRP but it's still unobtainable. I used to own a Euro Spec EP3 Type-R and turbocharged it 5-6 years before Honda decided to use one, so every time I see an FL5 on the road, I want one. EP3-R's shifter was...

Japanese-made compact FWD SUV, no CVT?

AFAIK all North American Tiguans are coming from Mexico plant, for the EU market the long wheelbase Tiguans are also made in Mexico. Only short wheelbases are made in Germany, which is not available here. The 8-speed Aisin transmission is made in Japan though ;)

Japanese-made compact FWD SUV, no CVT?

You don't have a lot of choices. There are only three non-CVT entries in the compact SUV segment (non-premium) CX-5 RAV4 Tiguan Since you wanted one assembled in Japan, CX-5 is the only one available.

My son just bought an all electric Mustang Mach E GT

Congrats! Buying a "sports" EV is something I don't understand, you buy a sports car for the experience, and EVs are missing that big time no matter how fast they are. I drove the GT version last year - the front motor gets really hot after 7-8 launches back to back and starts to shake really...

Early Oil Change on New VW EA888?

Just passed 2500 miles today, and my long-term average (since I bought it) is 21 MPG on winter tires. My wife usually drives it to work 3 times a week, and it is our weekend family hauler. I was expecting to have a small amount of oil consumption, but there is none. My GLI burned a little bit...

Early Oil Change on New VW EA888?

I changed mine around 750 miles ('24 Atlas). I agree - peace of mind is priceless, especially if you are planning to keep the car for a long time. I plan to change every 10000 km (6200 miles) going forward. It's a little bit more than the "unofficially recommended" 5k mile OCI for VWs, but...

GR Corolla, 3cyl 1.6T AWD, manual, 300 hp

Drove all entries last year, The 3-cylinder engine is fun to drive and sounds good, it revs quickly, and gear ratios are short. However, the interior is very tight for North American standards. The dashboard feels like a rental vehicle, it feels cheaper than anything else in this segment. I...

OBDeleven -- is it really a piece of junk?

Works fine for me, been using it for two different VWs, maybe a faulty dongle?

    2024 VW Atlas SE W/Tech

Congrats on your new purchase. We are very happy with our '24 Atlas, the only gripe I've personally had is the transmission tune. It does not want to downshift to the second gear when you slow down and accelerate from 2-20 miles and keeps it on the third gear for better fuel economy. It skips...

19 Subaru Impreza - CVT failed

Still much easier than a sealed oil pan you would find in many vehicles.

19 Subaru Impreza - CVT failed

There were problems with '15-'17 Honda CVTs, my neighbour's Civic had a new transmission in less than 6k miles. It just happens. Not against CVTs, my car back in 2007-2010 had a Honda CVT, and it ran fine. However, I was changing the CVT oil religiously every 25k miles. If I ever own a car...
