This was mostly highway miles with a little city driving. Around a total of about 40 miles a day.

    G-Oil 5w-30

DAVID: Universal averages show typical wear levels for GM's 1.6L engine after about 5,300 miles on the oil. You ran your oil 5,500 miles and your engine's wear couldn't be better. We don't see many Green Earth Tech oils, but this 5W/30 seems to be working well for you. The oil's TBN was 1.3...

    Vampire pump problem for uoa

The tubing could be curling up on you as you push it into the oil pan. If you buy another piece of tubing, make sure it is 1/4 inch OD. (We use 1/4 inch poly-flo) It has to be this to make a seal so that the bottle will develop a vacuum when pump the plunger.

    Non detergent oil

One of the jobs of detergents is to keep particles suspended so the oil filter can clean them up. If you don't have an oil filter on this tractor, you want the particles to drop to the bottom of the oil pan, not floating around causing other problems. That is why they recommend nondetergent oil...

    Alignment question

My brother inlaw has been aligning cars and trucks for 35 years and his practice is to have the driver set in the car while he aligns it only if the car is driven most of the time with one person in it. If the car has two occupants its a wash and he does it with no one in the vehicle, unless one...

Need to replace bathroom vent fan

I have replaced one a couple of times and it is real easy if you can buy one like the one your replacing. You lean the metal frame in the ceiling and unplug the fan and loosen the screw on one side and the fan motor comes out as one unit. Get the new one out of the box and reverse the process...

    Lower Unit Lubrication

I'm sorry about not understanding (older model Johnson). When you said older model, you meant what Noah used on the Ark. I have looked through my books and it is hard to find a SYN grease for your application (GEARS). The grease you are using now is designed for bearings and slides. (Lightly...

    Lower Unit Lubrication

I have owned a couple of outboards but none of them ever used grease in thier lower unit. If I'm not mistaken Lubriplate 105 is a NLGI 0 calicum based grease. This grease is not really intended for gears. I have always use syn 80W90 Pennsoil from Wal-mart thaat has a GL-5 rating.

    '97 Pontiac Bonneville, 3.8L, 114K miles

I had a 98 Pontiac with the 3.8 in it and it blew a head gasket about at the mileage your at. Watch your coolant recovery jug and if it starts disappearing with no leaks start doing a crackle test on your oil. Couple of drops of oil on AL foil and use a match underneath and hea the oil up...

    Geesh....I need some help

Try replacing the belt. My son and I chase a strange noise coming from his car and did much the same thing you had done and found out it was the belt. The odd thing about it was a fairly new belt (6 months old). We put the old belt back on and the noise disappeared.

10 HP Briggs & Stratton - Mobil 1 or GC?

I have used Mobil 1 15W50 in my B&S 14 HP lawn mower since I bought it new 12 years ago. I have changed the oil twice in 12 years. I used a white paper towel to check the oil level with and monitored the color. The oil has stayed clear for 6 years and the pucker factor kicked in and I changed...

    Ball joint boot busted!

I did the same thing on my 1985 Chev truck when it was new. Instead of replacing my ball joint, I greased and inspected ever time I change the oil. The inspection consisted of raising the tire off the ground and placing a pry bar under the tire and prying up on the tire looking for play. 150,000...

    ATF as an engine flush

I was in a training session for industrial lubrication by a retired Mobil Rep. As all lubrication training sessions go everybody wants to talk about their cars. The Mobil rep said he had been using ATF for a flush just before a oil change for years. I have tried it myself for the last 8 years...

    the best antifreeze

None of us are as smart as all of us. I want to thank Ken2 and Cryptokid for the education. The signs of when this is starting to happen (Head Gasket failing) your recovery jug will be empty and when you search for a leak you won't be able to find one. I wish I would have sent off a oil sample...

    the best antifreeze

I have found out some more information on antifreeze and head gaskets. It appears the OEM's are using cheap gaskets. They are essentially a steel shim with a fiber coating. There is better gaskets out there made by Felpro such as the Blue stripe. The reasons for head gasket failures are...

    the best antifreeze

This thread struck a nerve with me. I just had a 1998 Pontiac with a 3.8 series II engine lock up on me. When I took it in for repairs they said the head gasket had failed and antifreeze had filled up the cylinders. ( I was not the only car in the shop for this type of repair) The Mechanics are...

    Foaming Diesel oil

For the foam test, what acceptance criteria should I apply to used oil before I recommend a change or some sort of action? How often should I request a foam test? The diesels that have failed we outsiders believe it was because of foreign material. They failed after a rebuild of the engines...
