I have a work van from 09 with the 4.6, over 262,000 miles. The van is rusting away and engine is leaking oil at the head gasket. It is at the point I do not care about engine longevity. So I just top it off with 10w40. Can't tell any different.

This engine is specced for DEXOS 2 or DEXOS D. Not sure that Amsoil has any oil labeled for that.

Are those 10 speed transmissions not reliable?

I have looked it up in the past. There is no one that makes a synthetic Mercon V. Depending on the transmission, it may be ok to use a multi vehicle synthetic ATF. I am not going to recommend to use Mercon LV or newer.

As long as Mercon V is not obsolete, they will say that. Why did Ford make the original Mercon compatible to Mercon V when it was obsolete?

Do a full engine rebuild/swap or just repair the leak is the question. The repair requires taking a whole engine head off.
