Those interested in finding out GC's composition.....come in!!

Just tuned in after being away for a couple years. Where the results of this study ever published or did the test never complete? Edit: Nevermind, I just read some other threads about this topic [ September 20, 2005, 02:46 AM: Message edited by: Giles ]

can i mix oil to make my own viscosity?

One thing to consider if you are going to do oil analysis is that you won't know if the viscosity is close to what it started with since you will only be estimating the effects on viscosity.

    Mobil 1 0w-30 Consumption

Mobil 1 5w30 hasn't thinned on me in 4000 miles. I think you need to look at percentage thinning rather than absolute CST number to see how well it holds up.

0w-30 syn vs. 10w-30 dino for short term

I think the 0w30 is ok, maybe just change it more frequently in the summer months.

    Oil Change Formula

My '02 Ford Explorer with a 4.0L engine would be: 600*(5qt/5qt)*(244ci/220hp) =600*1.109 =665 I get 15mpg on average so that would be 665*15 = 9975 mile interval. Click here to convert from Liters to cubic inches or visa-versa (look for volume)

    Just ordered some Auto-RX

Bubbls could be from overfilling the crankcase, so make sure you have the right level.

Please help me interpret these charts

For $250, whoever created these should be able to explain them. It does seem odd that that the x axis is dates in reverse. I would expect a normal trend line to have dates increasing left to right. I'm not sure what the trend is based upon other than days in service. Miles don't seem to be...

    Mobil 1 SuperSyn 3000 Miles 4.0L V6 Ford Explorer

Joe, good advice, but which one is accurate? I will probably use Ana, but not sure if it is the one that's in accurate.

02 Explorer Dino oil Mobil M1 filter?

I have an '02 Explorer and I'm running M1 5w30 and have posted some results on this forum. After much research, I decided to go with the Motorcraft filter for now, and might switch the the K&N filter. I will be posting follow up results in a couple weeks on my oil change that has 4000 miles on it.

should I get a fram suredrain?

I use the fumoto valve and the quality is top notch. I'm not sure of the fram product. I think they are worth it especially if you plan on doing oil analysis.

    Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve

I have them on 3 vehicles (2 Explorers, 1 Toyota Camry) and haven't had any problem at all. The valves on the ford's are bigger so drain faster than the Toyota valve, but both drain as much as the standard plug. Whether or not you have the clearance depends, since you need about 1/2" to add the...

    Fumoto Engine Oil Drain Valve

It's possible because the height of the threads matches the height of the nut that it screws into. I've read where someone let it drain and then removed the valve completely and nothing else came out, proving this. I'm not that worried about a bit of residual oil since it all get's blended into...

    Amsoil vs. Mobil 1

Redrebel, I think you should stick with Mobil 1 if you want to keep the car until it dies. You can benefit from the higher TBN of Mobil or Amsoil. I take it from your description that you sit in traffic as much as you are moving (lot's of idling). If you only plan on selling it before 50,000...

    Amsoil synthetic in a Toyota 22RE ?

Doesn't sound like credible reasons NOT to use Amsoil or any synthetic in my opinion. I would ignore this statement, and use what you think is best based upon research on this site. If it were me, I wouldn't hesitate to use Amsoil or Mobil 1 synthetics after a breakin period.

    Oil study 4,000-mile interval in

I say keep the filter in there till at least 7500 miles. No need to skew the results by changing it now and adding a makeup oil. Unfortunately the cold weather is impacting your test significantly. This will make it difficult to compare apples to apples, unless you time the changes for a future...

    Mixing Viscosities.......

Al, your points well taken. I still imagine uniformity of size plays other roles not mentioned, such as flow, cooling and dynamic lubricating qualities but I could be wrong.

    Mobil 1 0w30

I think 0w30 and 0w40 are brothers while 0w30 and 5w30 are cousins based upon reading the specs. Since 0w40 is arguably the most advanced formula they sell, I would say that 0w30 is the 2nd most advanced. I would have no problem running 0w30 in any application where 5w30 M1 or 10w30 M1...

    Mixing Viscosities.......

I thought one of the major benefits of synthetic over conventional is uniformity of molecule size. So by mixing different weight synthetics, one of the major benefits are diminished. For those that are mixing 10w30 and 15w50 would be better off getting a 0w40 weight oil without mixing and be...
