G-05 No Longer carried By Pep Boys - FYI

Gah, I wish I'd seen this thread earlier--I just wasted a trip to Pep Boys to pick up some more G-05. I stopped by the nearest NAPA and they didn't carry it, either. I know the local AutoZone and Kragen don't carry it, either. It looks like it's getting pretty hard to find this stuff!

Motorex Cross Power 4T 10W-60 (Motorcycle)

I dunno, Mola! The owner's manual specifies 10W-60, and KTM strongly recommends (but doesn't require) this specific Motorex oil to protect the unspecified engine coatings. We'll see if the problem is fuel dilute, mechanical viscosity shear, or some other issue. Husqvarna's new thumper engine...

Well, I think I found the source of my high glycol reading.

Motorex Cross Power 4T 10W-60 (Motorcycle)

This oil was developed in conjunction with KTM and is strongly endorsed by KTM as the oil to use in the new 690 models (Enduro, SMC). Very, very different chemistry (check out the high glycol reading) with an add pack that looks like a diesel oil. Right out of the bottle it doesn't measure as a...

    Ducati 848 Rotella 5w/40

sunruh's found that Walmart's SuperTech 15W-40 holds its viscosity even better than Rotella; that might be worth trying. Otherwise, if you really want good viscosity holding power you'll need to switch to a straight-weight (SAE 40). Oil that falls down into the 30-weight range doesn't provide...

KTM 690 Enduro, OEM oil, 66 miles

Yeah, the flash is low because of the fuel dilute. Probably (hopefully) from before the rings got fully seated. If not, the design might dump a lot of fuel into the oil and that could be the motivation behind the 60-weight recommendation. Reminds me of a certain high-powered German automobile...

KTM 690 Enduro, OEM oil, 66 miles

The motor is a 654cc fuel injected, liquid-cooled, single cylinder, four-stroke design with an 11.8:1 compression ratio, four-valve overhead cam with roller rocker levers producing 62 peak HP. It has a shared sump lubrication system shared with the six-speed transmission and uses two Eaton pumps...

Geez, sorry I stepped out for a bit and missed all the fun! As for the LC levels, those are the recommended levels from Terry: 2 oz per quart at the initial fill (so 5 oz. total), plus another two ounces every 1,000 miles. I did do some runs on both the Rotella 5W-40 and the 15W-40; I'm pretty...

    What's with the 60-weight oils?

So I have the itch for a new motorcycle and have been looking at the KTM 690 Enduro and the Husqvarna TE610. I was a little surprised to discover that both require 10W-60 motor oil. They're both liquid-cooled, so does anyone know what the deal is--why do they spec such a thick oil?

    Red Line 10W-40; 3,027 miles; 1998 Kawasaki KLR650

Yeah, not bad, but not great, either. I think the big learning is that Red Line, in this application, isn't worth the price premium. I'll stick with Rotella and change it every 2K miles.

Anyone running RLI Biosyn in a motorcycle?

I've started running RLI's SAE40 in my KLR650. I haven't done a UOA yet, though, as my bike's sprung a leak and I need to replace a gasket and get a clean OCI first. So far the performance has been quite good with good shift feel. The real proof will be if it can hold its viscosity for more than...

Watch the viscosity in that M1; check out my UOA for a worst-case example. I hope it works better for you than it did for me.

    GC in MC?

Audi Junkie, you probably know my beef about 30-weight oils in most single-sump motorcycles (great for the engine, but too thin for the transmissions).

    Redline High Performance Oil

I ran the automotive 10W-40 for several OCIs in my KLR650. It kept the engine clean and I had no clutch problems. The only reason I've changed oils is that I'm trying to find something that'll hold its viscosity better; I could only get about 2K miles on the Red Line before it'd shear out of...

    tire sealant- any opinions?

I think I replied to your question over at the Tire forum, but in short, I used RideOn for about 30K miles on my Triumph and it worked very well. It sealed a puncture on my rear tire quite nicely for 2K miles and had no negatives. No fouled valve stems, no big mess to clean up when changing...
