Mobil 1 15w-50 Silver Cap in Sportster

Being a tightwad, I refuse to pay the outrageous bucks Mobil wants for their V-twin stuff. I've got another UOA around here somewhere, and I think once the engine is completely broken in things'll be OK.

Mobil 1 15w-50 Silver Cap in Sportster

    Not happy with the viscosity. Getting ready to send the next sample in. If it is in the low 10w-40 range again, I'll be shopping for another oil. Oil = 2993 miles Engine = 6730 miles Al = 3 Fe = 9 Cu = 42 Pb = 5 Sn = 5 Moly = 86 Ni = 2 Mn = 1 K = 3 Bo = 70 Si = 15 Na = 7 Ca = 2514 Mg = 827 Zn...

    New Harley

Never knew the Knuck was in service until the Twinkie motor came out! I've got an old Evo now. 130k miles, only the (in)famous base gasket leak 'til last year, then the engine sprocket seal started leaking. Had a AMF FL Shovel, 200k miles, no, none, nada oil leaks as long as tranny seal was...

What is the average life span of a Harley engine?

The big cover on the left side of your bike where the clutch and primary chain (couples engine to tranny)is the primary cover. Behind it is the primary (elementary, eh?). Older Sporties trannies and primaryies shared oil, plus there was a one-way valve between the primary and engine. New ones...

What is the average life span of a Harley engine?

Your Sporty shares tranny & primary oil. Engine oil is separate. I ran a '72 Sporty, rebuilt twice in about 100k miles, stroked to 77 inches at about 40k miles. I ran a '78 Shovel over 200k miles. Rebuilt top end at about 125k miles. Bottom & top was done after I sold it at the >200k mile...

    Ridge from syn oil?

Thanks for the replies. The guy isn't a mechanic, just a guy who has brought up some rather strange points about synthetic oil use. For instance - (BEGIN QUOTE) I personally am not a fan of synthetic oils in an internal combustion engine for several reasons; 1) Usually costs 2 to 3 times as...

    Ridge from syn oil?

Had a guy tell me that syn can form a ridge in a cylinder 'cause it doesn't burn off as easily as regular oil. Haven't seen any in several motorcycle engines I've torn into that were run on synthetic. Anybody else hear of/ see this?

    Motor Oil vs Gear Oil

HD is specifying the Syn 3 20w-50 in engine, primary, & tranny. It even comes as the initial fill in all three holes in the SE 103 bikes.

    Motor Oil vs Gear Oil

Has anybody that's been running HD Syn 3, Amsoil, or Mobil 1 V-Twin in their tranny had a used oil analysis performed? Wondering how quickly/ far down they are shearing, especially since hearing numerous reports of early tranny problems after switching from gear oil to the engine oil.

    Oils for motorcycles

'87 Evo Softail, >100k miles. Mobil 1 15w-50 Red, now Gold, cap in motor, Mobil 1 or Castrol Syntec 75w-90 in tranny, Ford ATF in primary, NAPA Gold oil filter.

    RevTech Oils

Has anybody seen any data on any of the RevTech oils for v-twins? Had a guy ask about it and I know nothing about it.

    oil for h-d primary

And just to throw a clinker in the works, I usually run Ford type ATF in my primary. Ran a Shovel that way for about 50-60k miles 'til I went to a belt drive. Primary chain was still good; just wanted the belt. Have been running the ATF in my Evo's primary since I bought it w/40k miles on it. It...

A Harley oil quandry (a little long)

I figgered they got the Twinkie moniker 'cause of the "if HD sez so, it gots to be true" crowd that buys 'em. FWIW, there ain't enough difference between the Mobil 1 V-twin and the new 15w-50 gold cap to justify the cost if you're changing oils at 3k miles or so.

    Analyses from Butler

Dang, this thread has morphed from a simple oil analyses results to something better seen somewhere else! At least y'all play nice, and don't slit throats and gut the folks who might disagree! To answer this: And how is a Japanese HD knockoff bike like a transvestite? It ain't the real thing...

    Analyses from Butler

Got the analyses from Butler Machinery in my e-mail today. They ran Mobil 1 V-Twin 20w-50, Mobil 1 15w-50 Ext Perf, HD Syn 3 20w-50, and Mobil 1 MX4t 10w-40. How do I go about posting the results, or getting them added to the site library?

The case for Synthetics and extended OCI on bikes

Ninjaracer, I've ridden HD since '73. Basically done on 3 bikes with lots of at- sea time in Unca Sam's Canoe Club between riding times. First was an AMF XLCH. Had tons of problems, but once I got everything sorted out, it went over 100k miles for me, and is still going strong. Second was a '78...

    Sent in for analyses ...

Want to see what the additive package in the HD oil is, especially compared to the Mobil 1 V-twin and the M1 15w-50. The 10w-40 was thrown in because a friend wants to know about it.
