Exxon Profit surges 55%.... And gas prices are up.

If I had to guess...I'd say because a lot of people are invested in this industry. Energy and money - it's all fundamental to our economy and way of life. No stocks here, so I'm with you in regard to some distress over the cost/profit story. Peace.

need advice quickly - blown engine

ks911man - Could you be more specific as to having "blown" the engine - sounds/smell/behaviors that lead up to the engine not operating? Does it still turn over when you turn the key but just doesn't start or is it locked-up/seized? Did you give the car a look over before driving it - fluids...

    Installed the ApexClone kit.

A little OT - I didn't think much of the lighting from my first car with its 7" rounds (35w sealed halogens). With my second vehicle with it's 9005/9006 combination in a '95 Volvo, well it's left me disappointed. Fresh bulbs and re-aiming hasn't helped much, but I think over the years I've grown...

    Hard Starts..Cold Engine

Perhaps it is that simple concerning fuel pressurization times. If not, how many miles? Perhaps you could check the cylinder compression values, as when the engine's cold the piston has higher clearances from the cylinder walls. If low from spec., put a little oil in the cylinder and recheck...

49.4 mpg on a stock hm '99 Metro

Newer vehicles have to contend with stricter emission standards, especially NOx. This curtails lean burn conditions, like during cruise loads, keeping the standard catalytic converter operating around it's peak conversion efficiency window about 14.7:1 IIRC. I though I heard of lean burn cat's...

    FILTER change poll...run em' twice???

Whether a sludger or not, good question. Some manufacturers may say to go 2 oci with the filter, but that may be with that particular engine under "normal" operating conditions. It would be nice to have a filter bypass valve activation light come on for us curious individuals, something like on...

Why did Oil Prices Soar? Supply and Demand?

I wonder about China's construction boom and other efforts put forth in preparation for hosting the '08 olympics, as not only has the cost of fuel gone down, so has the value of recyclable goods such as paper/cardboard, metal, etc. ??? Take care.

    Hybrid Truck

Some years ago when the show "beyond 2000" was on the air, I recall there being some testing of compressed air/gas systems for mass transit buses that would work mostly with otherwise wasted brake energies. This energy would be used to aid acceleration from a stop. Nice to see efforts at work...

    Friction modifiers -lower apparent viscosity?

I should've looked around in the tech area here as MolaKule has shed some light on FM's before. What can I say...just out of bed. http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/forums/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=729029#Post729029 Take care.

    Friction modifiers -lower apparent viscosity?

From what I've come to understand, FM's decrease the friction of flow within the oil itself, giving rise to this question. Now that I've brought this up, I feel I'm forgetting something in how it might serve through the phases of lubrication, like mixed film. Clarification greatly...

    Why 20wt Stubborness??

From the angle of the concerned but not fully in the "know", I think it's safe to say that one would fall back on the familiar. For some that would mean 30 or 40 weights from a particular or range of suppliers, over however long an OCI while using a similarly selected filter. That's not to say...

    Pre-oiler

It doesn't hurt, though represents added weight, complication, and potential issue(s). There's no way around the fact of protective film formations within a journal bearing requiring relative motion, fluid flow and fluid viscosity. The oil has inherent viscosity, the pre-oiler would enable the...

    Maxlife Synthetic--Horrifying Discovery!

For the consumer, "the product label is the law," says a company rep concerning his products (paints in this case). As for the web site...for the potential rate of formulation tweaks and the communication/task breakdowns...? Take care.

    Undercoating my own car..

I've dissolved/thinned the petroleum wax seal that's used for toilets and sprayed it with one of those handheld airless sprayers. Be sure to cover the brake areas from over spray/mist. The wax remains flexible at freezer temps, roughly 0f deg. Might add a little fresh oil for added corrosion...

50fuel? 40fuel? Anyone know anything about it?

I saw it an thought, "Is this a joke? That's like $10/gal!" Perhaps it'll fill a niche after all.

    Got some castor oil.....

Question - Will the use of castor oil lead to glazing of the cylinder? I bet over time the exhaust is going to get a little oily (recalling days of R/C airplane clean-up).

    Saved $245 dollars last night

Good for you. Could have been sediment, varnish and or gums from fuel that has aged and evaporated off. Then there's those diaphram type gaskets for carb's w/o float bowls, as they control fuel availability it could first show as erratic behavior to eventual no-run situations. Take care.

    The Recycled Playground..

The key I believe to recycling is to try to reuse the product with as little processing as possible and with creating as little byproduct as possible...which unless something further valued comes as a byproduct rather than waste that deems the further vested energy(ies), than... The...

Don't Skimp on Timing Belt Job

FWIW - When a tensioner can cause alignment/timing changes I think it's due to there having been slack on the length of belt from the crank pulley to the cam pulley that isn't to be laterally influenced by the tensioner pulley. I think I've gotten that idea from some install procedures on a...

Mobil 1 10w-40 HM vs. new RTS 5w-40

The new bottle is all that has changed at my local Mart - still the old spec's there. Perhaps it's just in the presentation/market designation, but I would continue with the RTS 5w-40, even if it went CJ-4. It's my opinion that it would still be a better formulation, but again that's just...
