    401 K took a beating!

Nothing to worry about yet, all the recent losses have only taken us back to the levels of about 5 months ago. This is a great opportunity to buy in on the way down.

    Torque vs Horsepower

A flat torque curves yields better HP at low RPM's. That's why the new 2.0t gas engines in sedans pull as good as the larger V6 engines with more peak HP.

    Torque vs Horsepower

Simplest way to look at it... HP is torque at a specific RPM. 150HP diesel has the same capacity for work as a 150HP motorcycle engine. They will have very different HP ratings at low RPM which would reflect the large torque difference. If we were conditioned to look at a HP/RPM graph...

Winter Tires for SF Bay Area - Lake Tahoe Weekend Warrior

In my experience on I80, any M&S tires on AWD gets you through, usually chains are only required as they close the road. I took the Outback to Yosemite though some nasty ice and snow and I couldn't get the Michelin Premier A/S tires to break traction. I even took the southern entrance through...

    Race gas for my ope?

I buy AV gas from a small airport with no tower. I talked to the fuel supplier and they were happy to tell me it was fine to buy AV gas. The actual crew is a PITA during the day, so I buy it at 9pm when no one is their. $4.89/gal about 2 weeks ago. I'm about 5 hours north of you.

Do you use your Pick Up like a truck or car?

I've commuted in a 1500 crew cab 4x4 for the last 9 years and has been great. I work in town but also have a family ranch and work in a lumber yard. I tried to commute in a car but I always found myself needing a truck. The other cool thing about the truck is that it seats 6, great for when the...

Negotiating with ins company when car is totaled

My brother and I both had major damage to our trucks last year. To my surprise we were both paid out top dollar. I asked my insurance, Farmers, and they said they pay out as if it is fully loaded and high blue book regardless of the vehicle's trim level or condition. I took a check for $7900 on...

FEDERAL TAXES. Why do I owe big bucks?

I was pleasantly surprised this year. I have a family of 4 with a gross income in the low 100's. I experienced $100 per month less pulled from my check and about $300 more back on my federal return. Used the standard $24k deduction and had some 401k contribution. Many people are forgetting that...

    Knife for a gift?

I'm really liking Benchmade knives with axis locks right now. It's fun to swing out the blade with no flippers or assist. People jump back a bit!

Do grandparents charge for watching grandchildren?

This has happened to my parents and now the adult grandkids are milking them dry. It's so sad that I dont even like to visit them anymore, it makes me too upset. I'm always looking for advice on this topic.

    R.I.P. President George H.W. Bush

I know a guy who presented him a shotgun at his house in Texas. After a quick inspection, he said let's put a few rounds through it! This was during his Presidency, must have drove the secret service guys crazy.

Tell me about EDC pocket knives

I recently purchased a Benchmade Bugout with no serrations. I really like it. I dont consider $115 for a UDA made top quality knife with a lifetime sharpening service a lot of money. To me high end knives start at $300. Be sure to get a deep carry clip and S30V steel with whatever you get. Check...
