Reading around the forum I see friction modifiers being used in manual transmissions to help the syncro's I believe? What chemical is a friction modifier and how do they work? If they allow friction on the syncro's how is it they don't make friction on the other parts of the transmission?

How long is it likely that gearbox oil shears down to the viscosity that it settles at? And how can I help get it to shear down quicker? I want it to shear down before the real cold comes as the oil I've put in makes the gear changes slightly stiffer when cold which will only get worse as it...

What is it that is in gear oils that make them smell, I can always tell the gear oil because of the horrible smell. I thought it was something in old oils but today I changed my oil to have that horrible smell from a fully synthetic oil.
