    Pricing for a new Harley

Much to the chagrin of my Triumph, BMW, and Moto Guzzi riding compatriots, I'm looking at picking up a new Iron 883. Without getting into why, I'm ordering CA emissions equipment which, here in WI anyway, means the bike will have to be built-to-order. Since I'm dealing with Harley (who is...

Chrysler 42LE - avoid synthetic gear lubes

I'd like to pick your collective brains. I picked up a Chrysler 300M with the 42LE automatic in it. It has a transmission and hypoid final drive in a common case, but with separate fluid reservoirs for each. The owners manual states specifically "use 80w-90 GL5 gear lube in the differential...

    Midget gearbox oil

Hi all, I'm pulling the gearbox for my 74 Midget to redo all the leaky seals and whatever light reconditioning it might need. It got me thinking about oil choice. MG recommend a regular PCMO 20W-50. I have PYB 20W-50 in there now and it seems to do well, but I'm sure it's far from ideal...

Castrol BOT 303/350 vs Honda MTF

I'll be changing out the MTF in a 2012 Honda CR-Z soon, which specs Honda MTF. My understanding is that this is an ATF-like fluid with an MTF-like add pack, per MolaKule. I take this to mean that it is like a modified Honda DW-1 ATF. Since BOT 350 (in the guise of Mopar C-Series Manual...

    Idiots Guide to Lighting

Is there a decent one out there? I'm not starting all the way at the bottom...but pretty much.

    94 Jaguar XJS 6.0 V12, 1400 mi, Unknown xW-30

Just got this back from Blackstone for my brand new old Jag. I bought it assuming it had a blown head gasket/leaky cylinder liner. From what they show here that appears not to be the case (or the leak is still really small). I'm surprised this came back as well as it did - until about 50 miles...

    Gotta love the marketing guys

A team of Pennzoil marketing guys stopped by work the other day to enlighten us lowly peons to Shell's range of magical wonder juice. Some select points they made... If a 0W-xx is available in the hot-temp grade you need, there's no reason to use a 5W-xx or 10W-xx (or, God forbid, a 15W-xx)...

    PYB 10W-40, 20W-50 Specs

How much zinc/phos/moly do the thicker grades of PYB have? My MG engine is thirsty again and my favorite Delo 400 15W-40 is somewhat difficult to find where I live. By comparison PYB is flowing out of the walls and really inexpensive.

    Torn Purolator UOAs

Putting out an all-points bulletin to encourage people to post UOAs of OCIs with torn Purolators. Having hard numbers will only help in pushing Purolator to step up quality, and I'll bet many of us are curious to see how much the media tears affect insolubles. Knowledge is power! ...or something.

    PSL14459 Cut Open 7592 miles

Sorry for the [censored] pictures - I only had my cell phone on me. This came off of a 1996 Mazda Miata after a 7592 mile/4 month run on M1 0W-40. The seam area looked pretty ugly but was totally intact. Curiously, the media on the opposite side was perfectly straight. The element was very...

Any UOAs on Air-Cooled Hinckley Triumph Twins?

Does anyone have some hard numbers to back up oil choice on a newer air-cooled Triumph twin? Triumph spec both a 15W-50 and 10W-40, currently running Amsoil 20W-50 moto. My dealer is adamant that the 50 grade is the only way to go, but since I'm in WI and the cooler circuit has no thermostat I...

Thoughts on ATF+4 in GM 4T60-E

Before the raging firestorm ensues, I know +4 is not the spec fluid for this trans and won't yield any major benefits besides enhanced longevity and more consistent performance. Now, carrying on: Does anyone have prior experience using Mopar ATF+4 in a GM trans that originally spec'd Dex-III? I...

    OK to use old filters?

The parts dept at work was clearing out old stock today, and suddenly I'm the lucky recipient of 4 older Mopar oil filters. #05012968AA - used on the old AMC V8s. They are obviously Puro Premium Pluses with a different paint job, and were made somewhere around 2000-2003. The nitrile gaskets are...

Mobil 1 V-Twin - why no JASO spec?

Title pretty much says it all; anybody out there know why Mobil 1 V-Twin doesn't quality for a JASO MA/MA2 certification?

Change Oil Before Storage or Not?

I'm wondering whether or not I should change the oil in my 2013 Triumph Bonneville before I put it away for the season. I'm running Amsoil 20W-50 motorcycle in it and have about 2000 miles on the oil, 5000 on the bike. The valves are supposed to be adjusted at 6000 so I'd like to wait until...

    Oil Recommendation for 74 MG

Greetings BITOGers! Long time lurker, first time poster. I'm looking for a good oil for my 74 MG Midget with the A Series engine. Factory recommends 20W50, but oil pressure reads high with that. At full temp idle, it never drops below 40 psi, minimum spec is 20 psi so I'm thinking a 15W40 would...
