Do NOACK and flash point mean essentially the same

NOACK is how much of the oil evaporates on a hot plate at a certain temperature, right? And flash point I believe is what temp the oil will combust at. Since these both deal with basically how and when the oil is “consumed” at high temperature, do we even need to know both figures? Wouldn’t the...

What are my options for high ester oil?

Are there any off the shelf oils that contain esters right now? Any varieties of Mobil 1 or anything like that?

    Will 5W-20s soon be obselete?

Similar to how 5W-30 essentially replaced 10W-30 years ago, my thought is, how much longer does 5W-20 have when 0W-20 is suitable for everybody anyway? Is there any advantage to choosing the 5W over the 0W, even if your car specs 5W?

Are today's full syn HM oils thicker than non-HM?

I remember a few years ago before Maxlife blend became resource conserving, people liked that it was on the thick side for its grade. It was commonly known that high mileage oils ran a bit thick. Now with Platinum HM, Maxlife Syn HM, etc, are these modern synthetic HM oils still thicker than...

Who’s the non-boutique NOACK king at present?

I remember before the GTL days, Pennzoil Ultra received high praise here for insanely low NOACK. At the time it was definitely the best off the shelf oil in that regard. I’m going to exclude boutique brands like Redline and Motul here, and just ask which common oil (brands you can easily find at...

Do I really need iridium spark plugs?

So my car is due for plugs, and the stock replacement iridium and CA emissions specific plugs are $15 each, even from discount sites. However, there are alternative platinums (which are also NGK just like OEM) for only $5 each. I know iridium lasts longer than platinum, but I don’t plan on...

Is there a difference between ceramic pads?

Looking at ceramic pads, there is a range of prices across the major brands. Is paying a premium for a ceramic Akebono worth the money over a cheaper ceramic pad from Bendix or anybody else? Or is it a situation like API certified oils where say each SN oil is made within a tiny window anyway...

Buying PAO/Group IV oil in the US. Options?

Hey guys, so I want to run a PAO oil for my next OCI, but I'm not sure which brands are even really Group IV oils anymore? AmsOil withholds this information as "proprietary". Apparently at least some Motul varieties are hydrocracked according to their MDS sheets. What about Redline? I'm...

Do we trust Purolator again now?

Hey guys, long time no see. I haven't been on here in quite a long time, but last time I was here was when the Puro tearing fiasco was in full effect. Are they better now, or do they still have the same issue? I thought of this recently when I noticed their snazzy new packaging on the shelf.

What are the IT oils coming into 2017?

I haven't really been active on here for a couple years, but there's always an oil on here that's the "it" oil, or the most trendy oil at any given time. Years ago it was German Castrol. Then PYB was the holy grail. The old Pennzoil Ultra was held in extremely high regard. So what is it now? It...

Can we now agree that Fram is the best?

They have an oil filter to cover every price point and consumer need. They don't tear. The "cardboard" (fiber) end caps are actually perfectly fine despite people's old concerns surrounding them. They just seem... fine and reliable. I've used e-cores, I've used PureOnes, but I use Fram orange...

Help me decide: PP HM vs Edge HM

So I decided I'm gonna try a full synthetic high mileage oil for the first time. I've run standard flavor M1 in the past and I've run Mobil Special and Super 5000 in my car for the past two years, so I'm sick of Mobil and want to try something new. I liked PYB in my old truck but I've also...

Is Magnetec the hottest oil on BITOG right now?

Seems like there's a lot of buzz around this relatively recent addition to the GTX line. Products get popular in waves around here, such as the German Castrol wave, and PYB being universally supported at one point. Even Purolator filters until the torn media defect surfaced. Is Magnetec the...

At what mileage do you go heavier?

My Accord has over 170,000 miles on it now. Recommends 5W-20. I know without actually measuring the bearings that it's really a guessing game, but is there a general rule of thumb to increase oil weight to compensate for bearing wear over time? Would it be beneficial to perhaps switch to a 5w-30?

How do you feel about Defy for newer vehicles?

Maybe "newer" isn't the right word. But Defy is marketed more at vehicles with flat tappet cams to me. Zinc levels are slightly higher than average but not THAT high right? Reason I'm asking is because I will be getting a 2001 Accord Coupe V6 soon with high mileage (over 150,000 miles) and want...

How do I safely remove an over-tightened drainplug

Well, went to change the oil of a family member's car today. Last OC was from a Valvoline Instant Oil Change location. I got under the car and the drain plug was CRANKED on, tighter than any drain plug I've ever encountered before. How on Earth do I get this thing off without stripping the oil pan??

    Do synblends cause leaks?

We know switching to a full syn in an older vehicle can unveil leaky gaskets that were dammed up with sludge prior, and that the hydrocracked/synthetic molecules are smaller than in conventionals which also adds fuel to the fire. My question is, will a syn blend cause this too? I'm considering...

Why don't more BITOGers use Quaker State?

I'm currently using QSGB in my truck after using VWB and PYB,and I have to say it's my favorite of the three so far. It runs noticeably quieter which I really like, and it's cheap at $13.50 a jug at Walmart. For merely a few cents more than SuperTech you get a very good SOPUS product and save...

What is the efficiency rating of an e-core?

I'm currently running an AC Delco branded e-core on my truck and was wondering what the efficiency rating is. I checked the Champ Labs site and Googled my way through various e-core related threads on this site and it's nowhere to be found. Just looking for a stat such as "96% at 20 microns"...

    Synchromesh compatible stop leak?

My truck is leaking at the front seal and its not worth the cost to repair it. I'd like to try to slow the leak down though so I'm looking for advice about the best synchromesh compatible transmission stop leak. Most products only seem to mention compatibility with ATF. Should I actually use a...
