    Subaru's lightweight 75W80 gear oil

Thanks for the suggestions. You are right that LSD additive is not needed, since early 90s Subarus don't have LSDs . What can I say, I was confused. I'm not sure if the Domingo/Libero transmission has enough displacement of the hypoid axes to warrant GL-5. However, since the stock oil is 80W...

    Subaru's lightweight 75W80 gear oil

Thanks, unDummy. I agree that the Castrol Syntec LSD additives are probably the cause of my [censored] syncro performance. Why do you think the viscosity difference (80W vs. 90) won't matter? And will I risk any damage doing tight turns with no LSD additive around the AWD coupling?

    Subaru's lightweight 75W80 gear oil

Rise from your grave! I'm resurrecting this thread to ask your advice on oil selection in 2010 (post SF). I've got an old Subaru, a 1994 Domingo. 60hp, baby. It uses the Justy gearbox, and had 80W GL-4 specced from the factory. However, it's one of those finicky subaru gearboxes that has...

'A1' VW Manual tranny used hypoid oil analysis (shrapnel)

Clutch disengagement is definitely OK. Changing the transmission fluid to Synchromesh has definitely helped, it will no longer grind during gentle shifts (doubleclutching) but is still a 25% chance of grinding if I get overconfident. I understand from Molakule that the additive pack in...

'A1' VW Manual tranny used hypoid oil analysis (shrapnel)

Just changed the clutch cable a few months ago and adjusted it to the Bentley VW manual's recommended 1" of pedal freeplay. I can engage reverse at standstil without any gear clashing at all, that's a confirmation of enough clutch disengagement, isn't it? Will try adjusting the clutch pedal a...

'A1' VW Manual tranny used hypoid oil analysis (shrapnel)

Just changed the gear oil in my Rabbit the other day, as part of trying to track down an increasingly frequent (25% of shifts) toothy/grabby 3rd gear (even with double-clutching). The manual calls for a GL-4 70W80 oil and claims it never needs to be changed. I've only owned the car a year, so I...
