    Coolant change for 11 F150

I get good prices locally on Ford parts, and the tech talked me into buying VC-1. He looked at the truck and said its orange coolant and while you can just add yellow it is not a good idea because you don't know what the last owner may have used. He said if it was his truck - let a quart go...

Sooty deposit on half the porcelain

These are 4 out of 16 on a 6.2L Ford V8 F150. I believe they are in about 80K, truck has 190ish now. Some seem to have 1/2 the insulator covered in soot, 1/2 clear (if you turn the plug, the color changes). Some very light soot on the lower metal ring. One plug came out cracked. Some plugs had...

    Thoughts about a Rust Treatment?

What if you mixed Fluid Film with "Must For Rust" (A Phosphoric Acid product with some buffering). Phosphoric Acid is used to "pickle metal" before painting. The FF will keep it on the surface and may even wick it deep into the rust. Thinking of testing this combo out on surfaces with some...

Readings for a tire which has the tread design running across the tire or for a siped tire wear such tread design is permitted, shall be taken at or near the center of the tire. Inspect...

Replace evaporator or entire hvac box?

Have an 11 F150. Evap is leaking. Choices are aftermarket evaps (around $50) or the entire box (includes, evap, blend doors, temp sensor, etc) about $600. Ford does not make a replacement evap for this application. The aftermarket evaps are sold by the big AC brands, but very likely (CE) products.

    Valve cores

I had to recharge A/C in the grand marquis and didn't realize how many different kinds of valve cores there are..... Seems to use 2 7 mm cores for each charge port.

    Opposed L-head to OHV swap?

Have a tractor with a blown L-head/Opposed 20HP, a 20HP OHV is 500$. Looks close enough to make the swap, maybe the muffler could be a bit of an issue. Would this be a good swap? Tractor cut very well before, the new ones with that size engine are like 2600$. I was reading reviews, some of them...

    Iridium Plugs and Gas Mileage

I have a 6.2L F150. The gas mileage is 15-16ish mixed driving (short trips less). Last Tuneup was about 80K miles ago. Motorcraft specifies a double platinum. Thinking of going with an NGK or Denso Iridium. The Ford Place here advised not to, they said the Motorcraft is application specific for...

    Scratched Transmission Pan Flange

Bought one of those Dorman painted drain pans for a 6R80. I was so disappointed when I pulled it out and saw two scratches on the flange in the paint that cross the gasket. Looks like an = sign. You can catch your fingernail, may be a bit deeper than paint, maybe just the paint, hard to tell...

    Leaky 6R80

Well the title says it all. Serviced about 70K miles ago at a dealer according to records. How can I prevent this from happening? Locktite? I assumed the dealer torqued it right. Also - I bought a new gasket, but my neighbor said they are reusable. Then he saw the leak and said maybe not. What...

Worth to rebuild an old opposed twin?

I have one of those 46 series opposed Briggs, about 20 years old. It ran well (bit of smoke on startup) until it threw a rod (spun top bearing). Both rods broken. Maybe I didn't check the oil, maybe just 20 years of use and it had it. There are very few parts available. Crankshaft has some...

Any long term Ford 6.2L peeps?

I love the truck but wish the mileage could be a bit better. It is an F150 Platinum. Need it for a business purpose for now. Today I tested it in mostly city stop and go, I am in the low 13mpg range. I was Very easy on the gas. I am going to run that FI canister with 50/50 seafoam and gas next...

Have Speedperks and discounts - best gear oil at Advance?

My New to me 11 F150 has a vent tube that goes in the box rail support. Anyway it was full of sand and I pressure washed everything. It is likely water got in. There is no service history either on the gear oil (pretty much everything else was changed at one time or another). It may be...

    Smelly A/C in F150

My 11 F150 has a sweet "phenol" type smell when you turn on the A/C. Much more pungent than PAG oil. I am not driving the truck for some repairs (so no A/C moisture) and if I go down everyday and turn the fan on it is there. After about 2 minutes, it is much weaker. I did try some generic...

    ENA coils from Amazon

I have a 6.2L F150 and some of the coils are sparking to the head. Since there is a backup sparkplug, no risk of hard misfire but this thing isn't a prius. I believe the boots were bad because dielectric grease helped for a while. Anyway the choices are $80 ea Motorcraft or Denso coils, a set...

    Fuel tank coatings

I'm curious, kinda in the market, even if I don't ultimately buy the tank, I wonder which is better/difference. Brand A (cheaper) Galvanized Steel, with silver powerdercoat Brand B (more Expensive) Ni-Terne steel I read painting tanks isn't such a great idea because of expansion, heat etc...

    Fix or Scrap/Sell

96 Explorer Gas tank very rusty and leaks. Strap is gone. Probably will replace Fuel Pump even though its good (I'm thinking Spectra Premium, they make the tank too) Need Valve cover gaskets for the OHV (not the most fun job, but doable). Leaves a trail of smoke Parts, I guess under $300. I...

Well written article on why ANY trans flush is bad

(sorry, accidentally cross posted). GM says NO NO NO to any service other than a pan drop. (Unless you feel this is an ulterior motive ) https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2012/SB-10062497-7690.pdf The use of external transmission fluid exchange or flush machines is not recommended for the...

    Toyota Transmission pan bolts

I read that Toyota Trans bolts (6 Speed A750F Tundra/Lexus Sedans/etc) can break the pan bolts by just removing them. They are M6 bolts. Some of the bolts seem exposed to the elements, and some break in blind holes. I bought a filter and now worried to install it. Lexus said it is very rare...

    Clocking struts properly

What is the trick to getting coilover struts aligned (or clocked) precisely. For my application they specify 34.7 +-2 degrees. The first diagram is the orientation of the strut bolt flat. If its off even a bit, you have to loosen it up and realign (or force the spring). The diagram is pretty...
