New Samsung TV requires a Samsung account to use

When I read comments like this, I wonder how much this type of unneccesary information is pushing the need for more data centers.

Trouble using a refractometer for windshield washer fluid

The discrepancy is that I was measuring a methanol-based washer fluid with a refractometer that is calibrated for ethanol-and isopropanol-based washer fluids.

Trouble using a refractometer for windshield washer fluid

I found my answer. It seems these mixtures are popular in Europe.

Trouble using a refractometer for windshield washer fluid

No, I didin't bother to test it with the floating ball device. The alcohol is different from antifreeze. I sometimes use water only for summer use. This device could come in handy to avoid confusion during season changes.

Trouble using a refractometer for windshield washer fluid

I'll double check the virgin fluid using my freezer overnight. As far as spraying on the windshield, winter fluid only works on a warm windshield. The alcohol component evaporates quickly when spread by the wiper.

Trouble using a refractometer for windshield washer fluid

I just bought a refractometer to upgrade from floating balls. Calibration with distilled water was spot on, right out of the box. It also reads spot on for coolant strength, using control samples (virgin antifreeze, and 50-50 strength), which is good. But when I go to measure windshield washer...

Manual Transmission Calling for ATF. Why?

I'm guessing ATF is used for two reasons. It lubricates, and it also allows for friction components (i.e., clutch plates, synchronizers) to work, thus maintaining a balance between lubrication and friction. It may also be specified to simplify stock on the dealer shelf.

Post how you fixed the issue causing a check engine light and code.

A long time ago my 98 Ford ZX2 threw a camshaft position sensor code, suggesting the variable valve timing part of the engine was dirty or sluggish. I finally traced it down to the 20W-50 I recently used when I was into thick oils. Swapping it back out to 5W-30 cleared that problem.

    Inner CV Joint Grease

CV joints require a specific grease for the application. Off the shelf Grade 2 wheel bearing grease is not appropriate. CV joint grease needs to contain a lot of antiwear additives. The CV joint experiences sliding motion, micromotion, and fretting, and needs a lube that protects under these...

When to replace an "old" car....

When to replace your vehicle is generally a personal decision. When you feel it's time - based on math, personal finances, frustration, opportunity - then you replace your vehicle.

    More Junk Parts. Very Frustrating.

The quality of replacement parts is all over the place. Some use the cheapest parts because they expect to buy a new car soon. Others use high-end parts because they plan on keeping the car for a long time. I notice Rockauto typically has a wide range of selection when it comes to replacement...

Panhandlers at absolute perfect choke point- family in real need or hustlers/ con men?

I once vacationed in South Florida when a panhandler was hitting up a line of cars stopped at a light. He took one look at my car, passed it up, and went to the BMW behind me. I was driving my dad's 20 year old Mercury Marquis hand me down. Most of the cars where I stay in South Florida are...

Handicapped or entitled? Not returning shopping cart

That's strange. Civil engineers have guidelines as to how many handicap spaces should be minimally alloted according to parking lot size.

    Odometer gear lube

First, clean off all the old grease. I don't think it much matters what grease you use. Lubriplate would probably work well. If you want it to last another 80 years, a silicone based grease might be better. I use Molykote 33. It's the best for this application. It's also super expensive. I use...

    Hard to locate wall studs

Before stud finders, my dad taught me to lightly hammer on the wall until you find a solid area. Then with a small drill bit start drilling until you hit the stud. Keep drilling holes until you find each side of the stud. Mount your shelves using the middle of the stud. The other studs should be...

2025 Nissan Frontier first differential fluid change - what fluid to use?

I think 6000 miles is a good point to change the diff fluid. Most of the wear-in debris has been generated.
