Shutting Engine off at Long Rail Road Xing

3 Minutes...well that is maybe a marginal gain. Anything longer than 2 minutes, I usually turn it off. The problem is you never know how long the train will be!

    apartment security deposit question

It sounds like they might be no longer requiring security deposits and want to apply your deposit to your rent. So if your rent was say $500 per month, when they apply the deposit of $99, that month would be only $401. If that is the case, then I would do it. Might be a good time to review your...

Don't Skimp on Timing Belt Job

I picked my up my car this afternoon. All is well. They did a great job. Used the correct type of Anti-Freeze and replaced all the extras that should have been taken care of. They even installed a new serpentine belt that was overlooked by the last shop. I was VERY LUCKY it did not cause any...

Don't Skimp on Timing Belt Job

Tosh, I would have taken it back to the orignal mechanic that did the work, but I have since switched companies and he is 30 miles away. They were very good with GM vehicles and general fleet vehicles. They just don't see alot of Toyotas. I should have stayed with the local mechanic that has...

Don't Skimp on Timing Belt Job

From what I understand, the gasket that was used was incorrect or a step was missing. The mechanic said something about "RTV". I am not sure if he meant in addition to the gasket or instead of. Hopefully he will have it buttoned up and ready to go today. No call yet.

Don't Skimp on Timing Belt Job

I learned a valuable lesson over the past couple of days. I have a 2003 Toyota 4 Runner. At 92,000 miles I looked around for a shop to replace my timing belt and water pump. The dealer quoted $1,100. The mechanic that I have trusted and used for years quoted $850. The shop that I used for all my...

    Scheduled Maintenance on "Luxury" Cars

Some people aren't very mechanically inclined or they just continue to do what they have always done. Many feel that the dealer will provide the best care regardless of the cost. I have always wondered why the dealers have to charge so much. I am sure they have done some kind of market...

    Tax Question - minor income

Funny, I have never met anyone that said they loved taxes! You have to remember everything you did the year before and hope the answer at the end of the return is good news. I agree.

15w40 would most likely work as well. Mobil 15w50 is probably where I what I would ultimately use.

Good Oil for short trips and cold weather.

Strange coincidence...I currently drive 60 miles a day as well, However in March I am starting a new job that is only 3.2 miles away. I have the same concerns about the short drive. I think the key is to change the oil based on time and not miles driven. I will probably change oil every 6 months...

Good Oil for short trips and cold weather.

I'd be tempted to just walk to work. I would drive it a bit more on the weekends to get it up to operating temperature. As far as the oil goes, what you are using is fine. It gives you cold starting protection.

VIs at 100 degrees C was 12.46. That seems pretty high for a 5w30. If I remember correctly the the spec's for GTX 5w30 is about 10.8.

    Will I be ok?

I wouldn't worry too much about it. I would just change it out in the spring. Boat motors run for longer periods at much higher rpms then cars. That is why they usually require the higher viscosities with more robust additives. Your manual probably says something about 10w40 with API SJ/CF or...

    Will I be ok?

I would use it in the spring, when the weather is colder anyway, but I would change it before the warm weather of summer. If it were me, I would not want to run it all summer, although it would probably not hurt anything. What brand of 10w30 did you use?
