The strut mounts on these are two plastic discs that slip against each other. No ball bearings involved. Some of the aftermarket ones are low quality or smaller discs. My experience is with 3rd gens.

I think tightwads buy used cars and therefore prefer ones with low resale values.

I don't think a true tightwad will be willing to pay what a good one is worth. Ranger/B2300 is going to appeal to the cheapskate.
