You guys are a bad influence :)

Because of suburban driving, I have been using Mobil 1 0W-40 on a 3k mi = 5k km / 6 month OCI in my VW Passat 1.8T. The engine got dino for about the first 20k mi / 30k km, before the infamous sludge TSB came out. Since that time, I have done 4 oil changes with Mobil 1 and the oversize oil...

    VW 1.8T vs 2.0T OCI

I just rode to lunch in a friend's 2006 VW Passat 2.0T and read through the maintenance section of his owner's manual. (I'm an engineer; I can't help it. ) VW specifies an OCI of 5k mi = 8k km for the 1.8T, which has a 4.2 qt. sump, but TWICE that for the 2.0T, which has a 4.4 qt. sump. Does...

    Auto-RX maintenance w/ Mobil 1 0W-40?

Would there be any advantage or disadvantage to adding a few ounces of Auto-RX (maintenance dosage) at each oil change on a 1.8T which uses synthetic oil (Mobil 1 Euro)? The first 20K miles were dino on a 3K mi / 5K km OCI; the last 10K miles have been Mobil 1 on the same OCI.

    Mobil 1 0W-40 versus 5W-40

Since I drive a VW Passat 1.8T, I use Mobil 1 0W-40, the only Mobil 1 with the VW 502.00 stamp of approval. In another forum, someone who is no longer on engine warranty suggested Mobil 1 5W-40, instead, because it is a bit more readily available to him, at a somewhat lower price. I suspect...

    VW/Audi 1.8T cam seals

OK, this is probably an invitation to sheer speculation, but here goes -- Last August, in the face of a rapidly spreading epidemic of oil sludge, VWoA sent a letter to owners of cars with 1.8T engines, essentially telling them to start using synthetic oil if they were not already doing so...

    VW 1.8T oil filter choices

Those of us with Audi 1.8T engines in our VW Passats or Audi A4s now need to use a larger oil filter, to compensate for having an undersized drain pan. Claimed equivalents to VW (oem) 068 115 561 B include: > Mahle OC 51 > Bosch 72174 > Deutsch D534 > Mann 940/25 > Beck/Arnley 042-8139 > Fram...

    tiptronic service interval

VWoA does not specify a service interval (fluid and filter change) for the tiptronic. They mention check for leaks and checking the fluid level every 40K miles, but checking the fluid level on these sealed boxes is almost as much work and expense as simply changing the fluid, while one is at it...
