Is this a good deal on a 2001 Lexus RX300?

I borrowed this 2001 Lexus RX300 from a friend who is a used car dealer. The SUV looks good inside and outside, and drives well. This may have been a fleet vehicle because he got it from an action (gotta double check). The major worry right now is that it has 187 thousand miles on odometer. The...

Mixing more than two types of oil

For the next oil change of Ford 500, I'd like to use various leftovers I have in the garage: Valvoline Nextgen 5W20: 4 quarts Valvoline SynPower 0W20: 1 quart G-Oil synthetic 5W30: 1 quart Also, Pennzoil Ultra 0W20: half quart... perhaps for topping off. Does this sound alright, or do I need...

Repairing oil pan with stripped drain hole

What are the options for repairing an oil pan with stripped thread on the drain hole? I am thinking of replacing the oil pan and the gasket right now. The plug used is M14-1.50

Please help me choose the best car for my oil

For years I have observed many people asking stupid questions on this forum about selecting the best oil for the car that they already own. The manufacturer of this car often demanded using inferior oil types such as the 20-grade oils, like 0W20 or 5W20. People are asking about the best 5W20...

Changing timing belt on a Lancer 2.0L

Are the instructions somewhere online on how to replace the timing belt on the 05 Lancer with the base SOHC engine? I got the wrenches, jacks, sockets, and extensions so I hope I might get the job done myself.

    Surprised by a Prius

I never took a Toyota Prius seriously or wanted to drive one. After all, all of the reviews online say that they're "slow", numb, etc. So I was really surprised when I borrowed my parents' Prius when they went on a vacation. I promised to change oil. The good: 1. You get 47-48mpg fuel...

Chrysler 300C shift lever stuck in park

I am asking about this issue for my neighbors. Has anyone run into this problem? The shift lever is stuck in P. The car gets driven maybe once a month. It's about 7 years old.

Do any fast lube places use decent oil filters?

I am curious about the oil filters used in fast lub/express type of places. Does any of them use anything approaching at least the quality of Purolator Classic? In my area, if you collect coupons, the cheapest places to change oil are Midas, CarX, Meineke, and sometimes Firestone. When I checked...

    Gasoline direct injected engines

Here is an article on basic problems that you can run into with a GDI engine: http://www.thetruthaboutcars.com/2012/05/ask-an-engineer-gdi-problems-in-a-nutshell/ This is probably important to know about since more and more new engines use GDI. The part about carbon buildup on intake valves...

    Has your G-Oil biodegraded yet?

I still have some fifteen FAR quarts of biodegradable bio-based G-Oil bought a year ago. Is it too late to start using it? By the way, I put it in 2005 Mitsubishi Lancer (base engine), and the thing start leaking all over place from the seals. Then I switched back to NextGen 5W30, and the...

A comparison of oil filter construction

I saw this posted on another forum and decide it to link it here. I hope it's not a dupe. http://www.bullittarchive.com/5000/5003/Oil_Filter_Cut-Away_Comparison_Kit.pdf

    Valvoline NextGen 5W20 oil burn?

I am surprised with the result of using NextGen 5W20 on a 2005 Ford Five Hundred with the good old Duratec V6 and 6-speed auto, which spends most of its time on a highway. The sump capacity is 6 quarts. The car burned nearly a quart every 2,000 miles. I was going to use the oil until 5,000 miles...

    Engine fails to start

G3 Ford Taurus with Duratec engine with no error code, fresh battery, smooth engine idle and cruise, and the usual (lousy) fuel consumption. On and off, the car fails to start. The engine sputters and then dies. The usually happens right after the engine is turned off (e.g. at a gas station)...

TB cleaner vs Carb/choke cleaner vs MAF cleaner

Hello I would like to clean by car's throttle body by spraying a cleaner on it. I just noticed that I don't own a special TB cleaner. I only have Carb and choke cleaner and a MAF cleaner. I assume Carb cleaner is too strong to be used around throttle body. What about MAF cleaner. Would it work?

AC compressor sounds like a little diesel engine

Whenever AC compressor is on, it sounds like a little diesel engine. This started after my entire AC system was rebuilt at a Firestone station (Compressor, Condenser, several lines, etc). I took the car back to them, and they said it sounds normal, but my ear tell me otherwise. In ideas what...

NextGen Synpower at AAP (and product sheet)

I just saw NextGen Synpower at advance auto parts. I am surprised that the bottle color looks the same. Only label has changed. Valvoline's web site is behind times, so I can find pictures only on AAP web site: http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/webapp/...powr_10267691-p Valvoline did post a...

Where do you get replacement vacuum hoses?

In many older cars, engines are strong mechanically but soft parts, specially rubber hoses, start to rot, crack and leak causing all sorts of issues. Where would you buy generic replacements? (I wouldn't want to pay a 500% dealer markup on such generic part)
