    Becoming a Buick Family

In addition to the '13 LaCrosse eAssist in my sig, my parents have a '14 LaCrosse eAssist and '05 LeSabre. And today we added another one: a 2006 LaCrosse for my son to commute to college. CXL trim, 3800 Series III, 113k miles on the odometer. It's nice enough I briefly considered selling my '13...

    All in ones for $500ish?

At work, we're moving to the HP EliteDesk 800 Mini. Dimensions are barely bigger than a paperback book - 6.97 x 1.34 x 6.89 in. You can find them used/refurb on eBay for less than $400; Dell and Lenovo equivalents are likely priced the same. Mount it to the back of a monitor and call it good.

+1 to this sub-forum, tomshardware, and bleepingcomputer. All three are solid resources.

    Cheap compact pickup for 3k?

Basically any compact truck from the last 25 years was pretty good. At a $3k price point, it's all about the previous owner(s) and how the truck was kept.

    Your Television Setup >>>>

In about 2008, we canceled cable and used our Wii with the Netflix app, and added the Amazon Prime Video app later on. In 2010, I built a HTPC with USB TV tuner for recording broadcast TV with Windows Media Center. Still using that setup on the same 40" plasma TV. It works, and does what we need.

    FreeTax USA

TaxAct was over $100 for me this time, federal plus two states - I work in KS and live in MO; my wife works in MO. Had I known it would cost that much, I'd have done it on my own. My wife and I each have W-2 income, 1099s from interest and dividends, and education tax credits for a kid in...

Favorite/worst things about your daily driver?

2013 LaCrosse eAssist Pros: Comfort, quiet, fuel economy, interior space, just about everything that makes a long commute suck less. Cons: Rear visibility, trunk space, OE tires (recently replaced with Cooper CS5, and saw a big improvement in wet and dry traction)

decent MPG and 3 kid across backseat.

The LaCrosse eAssist in my sig has a cavernous back seat. My 3 kids have ample room - they're 21, 18, and 12, and their heights range from 5'4" to 5'10". I've averaged nearly 30 mpg in mixed driving over the 26k and 17 months I've had it. You can get them CPO off-lease for under $20k all day...

Mint Blog recommendations for Meltdown and Spectre

I applied the Mint update, as well, and everything has been smooth sailing.

Do you normally need or use a filter wrench?

With the cannister-style filters (like the wife's Accord, the daughter's Galant, and all my previous cars), I hand-tighten and use a wrench to remove. My LaCrosse has a cartridge-style filter, with a so I need the wrench both ways.

Castrol Magnatec absent from local Walmarts

I just picked some 5w30 up last weekend at the store nearest my house. Now I need weekend temps to be warm enough to do the deed.

    Blotter Spot Test Procedure

With my last car I used a pack of perforated sheets of blank business cards for printers. Tore off a new card every time I took a sample. After the sample set up, I wrote the date the mileage and the oil/filter combination on the card. Then they went in a binder with plastic business card pages...

Highest/lowest mpg Vehicle u have owned?

Highest was a 2002 Chevy Prizm, 1.8L, 5-speed MT; I averaged 39 mpg over 5+ years of ownership. A 2005 Scion xB, 1.5L 5-speed MT averaged 38 mpg over 5+ years of ownership. Lowest was a 1966 Mercedes-Benz 250S, 2.5L straight six with dual carbs, 4-speed MT; I averaged 14 mpg over two years of...

    Update on Insignia TV

Insignia is re-branded from another manufacturer to Best Buy's specifications. Five or six years ago, I bought an Insignia plasma TV for the kids to game on - the PC's video card recognized the TV as a Samsung. As always, YMMV.

Anyone have AT&T High Speed Internet? (Not fiber)

I've had U-Verse for almost five years. Speeds have been a little better than advertised, and reliability has been very good. Had regular DSL with a landline for about six years before that, and the only time I lost service was when my modem died. Much better experiences with both of those than...

    48 Hrs with a 2017 MB C300

We just rented a C300 convertible in Florida with less than 2k on the odometer. I did like the pull of the 2.0T; it made for easy merging in traffic. Comfort mode provided smooth shifting without seeming to affect performance the way Eco mode did. On the drive home from the airport last night...

Ok, I may have a problem!

In many cars, the dash lights and tail lights run on the same fuse. It's a safety precaution, so that you'll notice not having dash lights at night and be inclined to do something about it. Identify the fuse and change it.
