    BMW B58 Engine Oil Recommendation

Came across this in the Australian version of the MKV GR Supra (B58 engine) manual:

87 oct. No tune, but have been thinking about getting an OTT tune though.

Every day, approx. 35 miles each way on the highway. Not slow either :)

The last few samples were taken cold. What else could cause the issue? I don't idle very much. My only thought is fuel getting in the oil the few minutes it takes the pull the Taco into the garage while its cold.

I sampled cold which I think is the fuel dilution issue. I drive 90% highway about 35 miles each way to work so not sure what else could cause it other than the cold sampling.

2018 Toyota Tacoma 2GR-FKS, Castrol Edge EP 5W-30, 6,111 OCI

Latest sample. I forgot to take a sample from the drain plug so I sampled while draining the oil filter housing. This run is with the newest M1 0W-40 that has the LL-01 approval. I went back to M1 5W-30 since gas mileage did suffer some. I think its a happy medium between the 0W-20 and 0W-40...

    Motul 8100 X-Cess Gen 2 5W-40, 2000mi, 2020 Toyota Supra

How so? The moly slowly goes down as break in lubes decrease. Viscosity increases as previous 0w-20 decreases.

Latest sample. Same oil. Still driven hard.

To add, my MPG has gone down some (about 2mpg) with the 0W-40. Thicker rear diff fluid may also be playing a part since I changed that at the same time as the engine oil.

Latest report. Trying to get a good trend going. Sample taken cold. Fe dropped quite a bit which is good. This is with standard M1 5W-30. I switched M1 0W-40 FS for S&G from this change and will do another analysis. I may switch back depending on how it goes.

    BMW B58 Engine Oil Recommendation

Sorry to bump an old thread as OP, but since Mobil 1 FS 0W-40 is now LL-01 approved, would there be any benefits/disadvantages to switch over Motul X-Cess Gen2 5W-40 (other than price)? Motul is what I have been running for the last few changes and have UOAs. Driving type hasn't changed. Thanks!

BMW Hypoid Axle Oil G4 Equivalent?

That is my confusion. Does G4=GL-5 or GL-4 (or both)? Is BMW's G rating not equivalent to the API rating? Motul 90 PA is good for both GLs.

BMW Hypoid Axle Oil G4 Equivalent?

The Supra manual says to use this in the rear diff (G3 for non-LSD, G4 for LSD. I thought they were all LSDs in the Supra?). Is there an alternative? The relabeled stuff you get from Toyota is just the BMW bottle with a 75W-80 GL-5 sticker over the BMW G4 label. This stuff goes anywhere from...

2018 Toyota Tacoma 2GR-FKS, Castrol Edge EP 5W-30, 6,111 OCI

Thanks all for the feedback. I have just seen a few of these engines, similar years with cylinder wall damage using 0w-20 after 100k miles or so. Not saying saying this is the root cause but I'm sure it isn't helping. Higher hths is something I'm in favor of. One example here...

2018 Toyota Tacoma 2GR-FKS, Castrol Edge EP 5W-30, 6,111 OCI

Here is my latest report. I wasn't happy with the iron levels (especially compared to other models with this engine) and decided to up the viscosity considering how I drive the truck, my climate location and my preference with the intervals. I drive it hard, no towing or heavy payloads but...

    Motul 8100 X-Cess Gen 2 5W-40, 2000mi, 2020 Toyota Supra

I'm curious on what the variable could be to show such a difference between the manf specs and a VOA, but it does somewhat explain a comparable drop to the UOA.

I can PM you details if interested, but overall: Ecutek OTS stage 2 93 oct tune, catless DP, No track. Agree KV100 is still low, but the VOA I did on this oil shows it at 12.54. https://bobistheoilguy.com/forums/threads/motul-8100-x-cess-5w40-gen-2.344916/
