    GPS navigation

Most GPSs have a re-route/detour option that will give you an alternative route (side roads). If traffic is a constant issue, your best bet is to get a GPS with comptible local traffic guidance so you get the fastest route based on real-time speeds. Also, the 3-D screen on most GPSs can be...

Why I love my TomTom 730: 1. I can keep my cell phone in my pocket while making and receiving calls in the car. 2. Finding my Banks ATM is a piece of cake no matter where I am. 3. I can feel free to explorer the surrounding area in new places 4. "IQ Routes" (this is where TomTom really...

Cabin Air Filters (the forgotten filter)

My first car with a cabin filter was a 2000 Saab 9-5. I bought it used the end of 2002 with 50K mi. The charcoal cabin filter was really dirty and overdue. After that I changed it every 25K mi (about 2 yrs) and that seemed just about right. On my 2004 Honda CR-V I bought new, I changed it...

    Duraglossed 2 months ago...what now?

I have 2008 Silver Prius that waxed/sealed in September. I used Duragloss cleaner #101, sealant #105, then finished with aquawax #951. Now that the waether is still fairly nice, I feel like I should reseal it. Do I just continue with the #951, or #105 with the #951 finish, or do the full 3...

My dealership is giving me free oil changes

Is the bulk oil's weight marked on the drum or would I have to take their word for it?

CVT Owners, How's Your Experience So Far?

FiremarshalRob, the same is true for my Toyota Prius. The dealer wanted around $1800 for an ext. warranty and I can get the same Toyota warranty for just under a $1000. Anyways, I rented a Dodge Caliber with CVT that just felt clunky, but the Prius is smooth. The Prius has been sold in the US...

My dealership is giving me free oil changes

Toyota specs 5W-30, not 0W-20 officially but I've seen some UOAs that show 0W-20 works well in the Prius. I wouldn't be surprised if Toyota switched to a xW-20 with the 2009 Prius. Steve, nothing wrong with the 5W-30 Toyota oil, it's just that I prefer full synthetic protection and the slight...

My dealership is giving me free oil changes

I purchased an '08 Prius about 2 weeks ago. One of the perks that this dealership offers with all auto purchases is free oil/filter changes for as long as you own the vehicle. Anyways, when the Prius hits 1,000 mi, I plan on replacing the factory fill with Mobil 1 0W-30 and running 5,000 mi oil...

Leather Seats - How do you maintain them

I second the Griot's Garage vote. Used this in my past 2 Saabs and the leather looked fantastic after 6+ years of daily New England use. The scent it leaves is authentic too.

    Beware Toyota's....

I'm putting up my 2000 Saab 9-5 for sale in week or so. I love driving that thing but after 5 years of expensive repair after repair, I'm calling it quits with Europeans. Back to Japanese for me. I like the look of the redesinged 2009 Corollas. Can't decide yet between that or the cheese wedge...

Tire deteriation - How long can I run them?

I bought a 2003 Yamaha Virago last year with only 900mi. That summer I put a total of 2300 mi on the odometer so at this rate, treadwear is not going to be a problem. I don't see any visible cracks. What is the general guideline for tire replacement not due to treadwear? How about the inner tube?

Annoying Magnifier box in Windows XP

Every so often, I get a square box on my screen that magnifies everything I move my mouse over. It must be a certain keystroke combination that I unknowingly do as it only happens once every few weeks. A reboot solves the problem but is annoying when I'm in the middle of something. At first I...

    Radar detectors-Which one?

I have both the V1 and Passport 8500 X50 "blue" and I much prefer the 8500. V1's arrows and sesitivity are very cool, but that's about it. There is no auto-mute on the V1 which makes it a deal breaker for me. The passport tweaks are very intuitive and easy to change on the fly. The V1 does allow...

Selling our home at a loss - crunching the numbers

Let me clarify loss. We put $120,000 down payment. So, I'm projecting we will get about $90,000 out-the-door after everyone else gets their handout. The fight side of me says to hold in there, suck up the commute, and wait it out. But then, the flight side says take the hit and make it up on...

Selling our home at a loss - crunching the numbers

We plan to put our house up for sale soon due to a recent job relocation for me. With the current state of the real estate market, I project that we will leave the closing with a NET LOSS of $30,000 (we've only been here 2 years). Ouch, I know. But then, I started thinking..."Hey, we can buy...

Motorhead Messiah - get 100 mpg out of a Lincoln

OK, maybe the 100mpg turbine is far fetched, but it sounds like he converted a 1965 Impala to an 800HP biodiesel that gets 25mpg on MTV's Earth Day "P" my ride. I'd take a 400HP that get 50mpg any day!
