Just spent $344 at Jiffy Lube

But not my money. Also, this isn't a complaint, more of an observation, so please don't attack me for complaining. Anyway. I have a company truck that I drive, a 2015 Silverado 2500. I like it, it's nice, and it's nice not having to buy tires, gas, etc. to drive to work. The boss has a Jiffy...

Thought I'd never shave with a blade again

On my last birthday, my youngest son bought me a little package from Bespoke Post containing a Maalim safety razor and accessories. I had sworn off safety razors decades ago, preferring disposables, and recently had been using a Norelco and not using blades at all. I was fine with the...

    Went to Jiffy Lube

Since I now have a company truck, I have to take it in for its maintenance. My employer has a Jiffy Lube account, so that's where I went. The OLM was at 4%, and the little light was flashing saying "change oil soon". It's a 2015 Silverado 2500. I walked in, and the guy said, "Hey, you're Bobby...

    "Safety" spouts on gas cans

I have several gas cans of varying capacities. They all have some strange combination of interlocks that must be twisted, pressed, or otherwise manipulated to release the gasoline. The main feature of all of them seems to be that, once you have figured out the proper sequence of manipulations...

    Tom Petty's 12-string

Fascinating (to me anyway) story from Mike Campbell about the guitar on the cover of "[censored] the Torpedoes." He plays parts of the song in the video, and it's just breathtaking.

My son is a Kentucky Colonel

My son just sent me a pic of his certificate. I didn't even know it was a thing, but when I saw the governor's a d Secretary of State's signatures, I figured I should look into it. To be clear, I have two sons and two daughters. The subject of this post is my older son, who is a disabled...

    Looks like I'm changing jobs

I didn't want to. However, my employer has hired a guy as my direct supervisor that I despise. I would say "hate", but I'm really trying not to hate him, hate isn't good. He's one of those guys that is just able to always have a negative slant to every conversation. Even if he tries to be...

    Salps

I saw an article online recently about a newly discovered ocean sunfish. I always thought the mola mola was pretty cool, after all, it eats jellyfish! Anyway, the "new" fish is called the Mola Tecta, and it can reach weights of more than two tons. In any case, the article said that the Mola...

    I'm 60 years old

I turned 60 in July of 2018. I have to say, it makes you think. I have no plans to retire, and that is not one of my goals, in and of itself. I can't afford to retire at this point, so it's a good thing that I like my work. I expect to work for at least another 10 years, but since I don't know...

    I replaced my disposal and...

I wanted to share some of what I've learned about disposals over the years. Some of you may remember that I've been a plumber for more than 30 years (closing in on 34 or so). When I started out, it seemed like all I ever saw was Insinkerators. I saw the occasional Waste King, but I wasn't...

Put my wife's dog down yesterday

We've been married a little over 36 years, and for the majority of that time, we've had dogs. It never gets any easier saying goodbye to them. About 8 years ago, we got a rescue dog named Blue. Blue was a big boy, about 120 lbs., shepherd/husky mix. He had been abused, and was a little timid...

    Sudden loud valve noise

I have a ‘94 Dodge Ram 2500 4x4 with the 360 Magnum. Tonight I drove it to the store and ended up with a problem. When I got to the store, there was a loud tapping noise coming from the engine. I drove it home as slowly as I could, with the clicking, and some missing. What do you think...

    '94 5.9l Magnum tune-up time!

I've had this truck maybe a year, and I figured it was time to change out the plugs, wires, cap, and rotor, since I don't know how old they are. Engine has around 50,000 miles on it. Got this stuff from Rock Auto. A lot of guys on the Ram truck pages recommend copper plugs for the old trucks...

94 Dodge Ram motor mount replacement

My old Dodge Ram needs at least one new motor mount. It's a 2500 4x4 with 360 Magnum. The motor mounts are clearly visible, and don't look hard to get to. My question is how to support the engine? Is it OK to jack it from the oil pan, or will that destroy the oil pan?

    Watching houses burn

Right now, and it’s heartbreaking. It got hot today, about 106 to 115, depending on what part of the county you’re in. And the fires started. The big one right now at “only” 400 acres is in Alpine, a pretty area east of San Diego. At least 20 structures have burned, most of them single-family...

    Weldmark/MigPony/Eastwod

Some years ago, I bought a Weldmark Mig25-140. These were IMO very overpriced, but I negotiated a reasonable deal with West Air, about the same price as an Eastwood 135. As it turns out, it's the same machine anyway. Northern Tool used to sell the MigPony which appears to also be the same...

Do you have a quarter, or a dollar?

That’s the latest way panhandlers are asking for money around here. In other words, if you’re feeling generous, I’ll take whatever I can get. Recently, 7-11 has had a deal where if you get a coffee and a donut, it’s actually cheaper than just getting the coffee. Since I don’t usually eat...

    Why is everything "tactical"

I was shopping online for a backpack, and most of them were "tactical backpacks." Does this mean they have pockets for grenades? Do they think I'm joining the SWAT team? This was on the Bass Pro Shops website, for Gosh sake. TV commercial: Get this new tactical flashlight! Only $14.95! Buy now...

    Two tales of elder abuse

I don't consider myself "elderly" although I'm no youngster. But the things that are done to old people are sometimes truly horrifying. My mother-in-law was killed by incompetent doctors. Warning, this gets gruesome. She was 85, and was admitted to the hospital with an apparent bowel blockage...

    Broken Cat

I have a '94 Ram 2500 4x4 truck with a utility bed and pipe rack. Ever since I got it, I've felt like it didn't have enough power. I've never had a Dodge 360 before, but even at a rating of 230 horsepower in an 8800 GVWR truck, I thought it should have a little more juice. Just recently, it...
