Valve Cover Gasket Lifespan vs OCI

Does changing the oil more frequently extend the expected life of the valve cover gasket? More frequent means more frequent than manufacturer specified e.g. instead of 10k/1 year specified from manufacturer, change at 7.5k/6 months.

76 claims to be 30% above Top Tier

I was just at a northern CA 76 station, and they had a sign saying their cleaning additive amount was 3 times more than EPA required, and 30% more than Top Tier. I believe it is the first quantified claim by a gas company against the Top Tier standard.

    TPS? Or other issues?

Hi, I have a 2005 Mazda 6i automatic (4-speed). I was on my way from LA to SF driving at ~70-79 mph on I-5. Weather was really hot at ~95-100F. At about the mid-point of my drive, the car got really jerky when I let off or got back on the throttle, so I took the closest exit and proceeded to a...

Oil Consumption Towards End of Interval

My WRX (turbo) consumes ~0.5 quart and my OCI is 5k. Consumption only starts when I am 3500 miles into the OCI though. I have tried many types of oil (Redline 10w-40, Mobil 5w-40, Mobil 0w-40, and Chevron 10w-40) and they all behave the same way. I have also done UOAs and they came back normal...

    Best Shifting GL-5 75w-90 (or 80w-90)?

What do you guys use? I'm using SF MTL-R and it's great, but Molakule is not selling it anymore. I used to use Swepco 201 80w-90, and it was decent except for a little bit worse cold temp shifting compared to the SF MTL-R. I am wondering what to use when it's time to drain out the SF MTL-R. If I...

    Mobil 1 EP 10w-40, 5100 mi, 04 Subaru WRX

My second UOA. Car is a 2004 Subaru WRX with Cobb Stage 1 ECU mod increasing HP from 227 to ~255. * Daily highway commute of about 60 mi round trip. * Second run with Mobil 1 EP 10w-40. However, this oil has been discontinued. I probably have enough for another oil change, but will need to move...

Automatic: When Stopped in Traffic, Shift to Neutral?

Aamco suggests to shift to neutral when stopped in traffic to extend transmission life by stressing the ATF less. Is this true? Could someone in the knows comment on this? http://www.aamco.com/main/transmissiontips/tip_7.html

I went to this online place called mazdamart.com and bought some filters for my Mazda 6i. Anyway, they shipped me some filters in yellow boxes that say "made in Thailand". It seems to be made by a company called "Full". The box looks different from the Mazda filter I once bought from the...

Oil Analysis for Pinging / Detonating Engine?

I have a 2004 Subaru WRX with a modded ECU (Cobb AccessPort Stage 1). It has a 2.0L turbo engine. And since I live in CA, I get crappy 91 octane gas only. With the ECU upgrade, my car sometimes gets some slight pings / knocks / detonations during full throttle. I have the following questions...

    Gear Lube for Synchro Action

I own a Subaru WRX 5-speed. Subaru specs a GL-5 75w90 gear oil. This car's 5-speed is very stiff. Sometimes it hardly gets into 2nd gear before it warms up. Quite a few people uses synthetic gear oil in the transmission (which shares its oil with the front diff), but many complain the shifting...

Switching Oils in New Cars Affect Seals?

I bought my 04 WRX wagon last Nov and followed the manual's recommendation to do the first oil change when I had 2500 miles (manual says 3k mi / 3 months, should have driven more =) ) The dealer used Mobil 10w-30 Drive Clean oil. However, I plan to follow the severe service interval (3750...

    Valvoline High Performance Gear Oil

Long time lurker, first time poster Need some expert interpretation on the following MSDS. Below are the MSDS for Valvoline's dino 75w90 and 80w90 gear oil. However, for the 75w90, they have 28-38% of "HYDROTREATED NEUTRAL OIL C15-30", while the 80w90 doesn't have any. Is that extra component...
