    310,000 Mile 2AZ-FE Innards

Family member had a Camry with that 2.4L and got it well above 400K. It finally blew a head gasket, but it was driven around without a working radiator fan for quite some time 😒 Fixed it, but then it immediately got rear-ended 😣 Awesome, reliable engine!

    3rd gen (1997) 4Runner

If you look up Timmy the Toolman on YT he has an excellent and fairly exhaustive video series all about 3rd gen 4Runner repair. Great source for some of the basics you'll encounter with a new-to-you vehicle: transmission fluid change, timing belt, radiator replacement, brakes, etc.

    Chaser VS Tap!

I've had a set of thread chasers for 15+ years and refer to it often. No risk of accidentally cross-threading something since they're not nearly as sharp as a tap. Like someone said earlier they are handy for "cleaning" the threads.

    Data Challenge!! UOA Trends 7yr / 100k

Thanks ya'll. I know the engine is wearing well, so definitely not an attempt to overthink it out of worry or fretting -- it's just fun! Blackstone was kind enough to answer an email from me about this topic. Based on our interaction it still seems that optimizing for minimal ppm-per-mile...

    Data Challenge!! UOA Trends 7yr / 100k

Well, I like data and like putting it to use. But it sure sounds like the science is settled and there's nothing to talk about. Is there a better proxy for "wear," or is it a black box?

    Data Challenge!! UOA Trends 7yr / 100k

So in short, despite the 14 data points, there is no way to draw useful conclusions about optimizing oil selection or OCI?

    Data Challenge!! UOA Trends 7yr / 100k

Pablo, can you help me understand what you mean by "it's not wear"? Are the ppm counts of the main wear metals not the best way to determine the amount of wear happening during an OCI? Points taken about measurement error / error bars, and dataset only has n=14. Only so much solid statistics...

    Data Challenge!! UOA Trends 7yr / 100k

Sorry, just have to poke a little when I can. Engineering topics but this isn't work  I had the thought to compare the different variables (oil weight, interval length, etc) vs Total wear PPM / interval miles - Looks like 40wt oils give lower wear - Total wear PPM counts are independent...

    Data Challenge!! UOA Trends 7yr / 100k

For metrics my thought was to minimize ppm/mi for the key components Fe, Al, and Cu

Compression values are good, zero oil consumption

    Data Challenge!! UOA Trends 7yr / 100k

I agree with your points, but I want to see if I can differentiate "good" from "better" in this data, in the quest to hit 500k ;)

    Data Challenge!! UOA Trends 7yr / 100k

Hi folks, I've been collecting UOAs on my 1999 4Runner with 3RZ engine since 2018. I now have data for 14 (!!) UOAs to sort through. There should be enough information here to help guide me on making decisions for future oil changes. My criteria here are to minimize ppm wear in Fe, Al, and Cu...

    3RZ - 300k oil analysis

Another oil analysis report! This was with T6 10W-30. Interesting that Manganese showed up in the last report and this one, never seen it before. Some googling tells me it's most likely from a fuel additive. I use Techron occasionally, maybe one treatment per OCI.

25% off Toyota Genuine Parts - Serra Toyota 3/1-3/15

Didn't order any huge parts but was happy with the deal I got at Serra. A friend of mine bought a steering rack and got a killer price w/ free shipping.

    Crush washer truth

I tried my best to skim through all zillion previous replies, but forgive me if someone made this point already... Since the crush washers are "soft" they provide a long, linear portion in the tightening process. Imagine drawing a torque vs. angle curve. If the washer was "hard" it would just...

Piston Soak made smoking way worse ?

Very interesting! Thanks for taking the time to follow up with the details. A caked-up oil control ring would explain why the cylinder walls were not receiving lubrication, right? FWIW -- B12 main component is methylene chloride (if memory serves).

Ball Joints - school me / help choose.

Yes. I did this on the balljoints and tie rod ends on a 2000 CRV and the urethane cups held for 10 years before starting to split.

Ball Joints - school me / help choose.

Energy Suspension and Prothane sell urethane "cups" that replace sealed boots for balljoints. I have removed split/rotted balljoint boots and installed one of these cups (with a little replacement grease) and had the joint last for another decade. You can use this method to rescue a quality OEM...
