86 octane top tier or 87 octane not top tier?

I'd get at least top tier (some brands are above it). Especially in direct injected engines with the fussy injectors. There is actually a new level of top tier soon, Top Tier Plus I think, because the newest injectors need more to be kept clean.

Who makes BMW's "store brand" oil?

Yeah I don't like the 0w12 nor the Castrol part tbh. I'm even thinking of using another product during my intermittent changes between the free ones.

Who makes BMW's "store brand" oil?

Having recently acquired a B48 new BMW this thread was of interest to me. I noticed on FCP Euro that the 0w12 BMW Oil says "Made in China," on the back of the bottle. Is that a little odd?

Is the Chevron gas THAT much better?

I tend to only run Shell V-Power. I believe V-Power and the premium Exxon/Mobil offer is probably the best. V-Power has 2x the additives that the regular Shell has (which is itself Top Tier). Exxon/Mobil use the same Infineum additives, so I believe their premium is equal and they tout the...

Valvoline Restore and Protect Oil Burner Test Results

It (Valvoline Restore and Protect) burned more than other oils for me too.

Best 5W-40 or 0W-40 For DI Noise?

It probably wouldn't help with DI noise, but I've found the HPL Euro 5w40 pretty smooth (probably thanks to the Moly). If you were ok with only a 5w30, Restore and Protect is pretty quiet/smooth too (in general not necessarily for your situation/engine).

Mobil 1 Full Synthetic vs Mobil 1 ESP

Nah, not at all. I was just comparing Euros.

Mobil 1 Full Synthetic vs Mobil 1 ESP

Older Euro vehicle, 0w40 probably better, especially if doing manufacturer 10k-13k oil changes.

    0W-40 or 5W-40 only

I'd go with Mobil. It could be in my head, but I believe their Euros keep engines cleaner than Castrol's Euro formulas.

Havoline now in on the, "Protects up to..." maketing with the introduction of API SQ

Right, this is not going to trick me. I'm worried about someone who has no interest in automobiles besides getting them from point a to point b. There's legit no car out there that is going to recommend 25,000 OCI, so why put it on the bottle? I'm not suggesting it's super shady or I think...

Havoline now in on the, "Protects up to..." maketing with the introduction of API SQ

I don't like the thought of consumers believing they can go 25k between oil changes. It feels like a pretty big authority when Castrol slaps that on their label. It's not much of a leap to be your everyday car owner and start to believe that is ok (plus not much of a leap to apply it to other...

Havoline now in on the, "Protects up to..." maketing with the introduction of API SQ

The 25,000 Castrol claim terrifies me. I don't understand why they put that on the bottle.

    New (old) car and Wax

Volvo has really nice silvers they pick, so I bet it looks great. You can try a paint polish/cleaner before the wax. Meguiar's Ultimate Compound you should be able to find easily. If you're just using it by hand with a foam applicator, it's not particularly aggressive. Follow it up with a...

Oil for a road trip with numerous mountain passes?

Kirkland Synthetic is probably pretty premium compared to a lot of bulk oil. I know what you mean though!

    Regular vs Premium Gas Pricing

Around me, about 40 cents from Regular to 91 is fairly common. In the old days, it was just 10 cents between each tier (so 20 from regular to premium). There are some stations that try to have a much bigger spread as you point out. I try to avoid those stations.

The cleanliness of his rings was wild. I didn't know rings could be that clean! Even when Amsoil or Valvoline post their pistons/rings, they don't look that clean!

    Valvoline Restore and Protect

Mine too. Coming from Mobil 1 0w-40, much quieter. However, I just switched to HPL and it is just as quiet and even quieter than Valvoline Restore and Protect at high RPMs. I put it down to either the viscosity or the moly. The moly is pretty stout in Valvoline Restore and Protect too.

Valvoline Restore and Protect Oil Burner Test Results

I wouldn't. In my Volvo, at 5100 miles, TBN was down to something like 2.1 I believe.
