Does the brake closest to Master Cylinder do slightly more braking?

I suggest that your comment “all things being equal” needs reconsideration. I have observed one front disk being much hotter than the other - the problem: The caliper slides were binding on that side. Interestingly, there was no ‘pull’ to one side. I have also casually sensed a small...

Techron causing rough idle and low power?

Hi - I have successfully used Techron for many years on various vehicles, about twice per year, along with Top Tier fuel. However, 2 years ago I had the same experience you on my 2006 Honda Accord. It occurred just after adding Techron, and I was concerned that it might stall in intersections -...

    Battery Maintenance

Hello - OP here: Donald, I am driving more & longer now, and able to get a fair percentage of highway driving - in 5th gear! Also, I now have a NOCO Genius 5 charger. Through the winter (short trips) I used it monthly and observed it took about 3 hours to get to full charge. This reminded me of...

    Battery Maintenance

mk378 - Yes, I measure to the battery posts as the 'gold standard'. I also measure between the battery clamps and verify it is the same voltage. Then I move DMM ground lead to the body and engine block to verify the voltage remains the same.

    Battery Maintenance

Thanks to all who have replied - very helpful! To clarify a few points raised above: -> For my various cars over 45 years, they were / are my daily-drivers. The battery slowly degrades until I hear slow-crank over several days. Typical life: 3-4 years. This is my motivation to try to maintain...

Chipless Fords May Be Sent to Dealerships

It is interesting that these dealer-finished vehicles would not have a final test of important electrical functions at the factory. Perhaps the dealers can satisfactorily install & perform the final operational tests, but it raises the question / concern in my mind about critical safety systems...

    WD-40 Gel Lubricant?

I bought WD-40 Gel Lubricant last year. I have used it in car door hinges & internal mechanisms near the latch, and for household door hinges. It works very well, as advertised. It lubes well, and has stayed in place for many months.

    Time to change tires?

Check the depth of your sipes. 10 years ago, I had Michelin tires (specific type unknown) with half-depth sipes. When the tires wore down past the sipes, then wet performance / handling changed greatly for the worse. Since then, I have purchased only full-depth sipes. I researched Energy Saver...

What Year Did you Start Using Synthetic Motor Oil?

2004, per the advice of this site for my 1997 Camry with sludge-prone engine. M1 slowly cleaned it over the course of 3 OCI - about a year. That car ran fine for 20 years.

Low-temperature lube for sticky trunk lock mechanism

look at WD-40 Specialist® Gel Lube, also called ‘Spray & Stay Gel Lubricant’ It claims to have a very wide temp range. I bought it for my door latch - also concerned about winter operation. Thus far I am impressed with it. Gel really sticks. Interestingly, it is a rattle can.

Any 2020 Lexus RX350 ownere here?

I have a 2020 RX350, purchased new in Dec-2019. 2020 is a mid-cycle refresh, and is an improvement - you can find details in a web search, and they are correct. I'm told the suspension improvements are mild, but really good (I have never driven a 2019 or previous). I recommend the 2020 over...

    Sludgy 1990 F150 5.0

Welcome to BITOG! Your comment, “It starts/runs well and seems to have decent power” is significant. Also your stated goal: slow clean. Your son has taken good first-steps, so I suggest caution & ‘do no further harm’. Your plan & oil choice are good to get you on the road soonest with lowest...

    Squirrels in the attic

Just like vehicles, rodents will chew house wiring. Therefore you have to get them out of the attic somehow. I agree that repellant / relocation is best. Of note: The electrical inspector for my town told me that decades ago the Romex manufacturers added a green strip on the plastic jacket -...

Oil Rec for Moderately Sludgy Engine?

I know you said Dino. However, consider Mobil 1 synthetic. No additional additives. M1 gradually cleaned my old 1997 Camry with several short OCI over 6 months, documented by removing the valve cover. Gradual cleaning is key - to avoid releasing big chunks of sludge.

    Door lock lube spray suggestions?

Modern cars often have an electrical switch associated with the key lock. I do not know if it is embedded within the lock. If so, then graphite, being conductive, can short the contacts. I have read about this issue in various places, and stopped using graphite. Now I don’t know what to use...

Door Latch Lube / Grease Compatible with Plastic Parts

Hi! I have a 2006 Honda Accord and will be removing the door latch to replace the lock actuator. Any suggestions for maintenance lube / grease for the exposed portion of the latch -and- the 'inside-the-door' mechanisms? There are various mental & plastic / Nylon parts - what grease to use or...

Fully synth or just normal mineral

My thoughts / suggestions based on your environmental conditions, driving style and stated desire for quality & robustness, with cost-not-a-factor: -> Use a full synthetic like Mobil1 or Mobil1 EP. -> I don’t know what viscosity to suggest. Maybe it does not matter that much (?) with full...

Just how critical is changing the fuel filter?

On the advice of my trusted Honda / Toyota mechanic, no fuel filter changes and no fuel problems on these vehicles I purchased new: -> 2000 Odyssey, owned 20 years / 210K miles, -> 1997 Camry, owned 20 years / 220K miles, -> 2006 Accord V6, owned 14 years / 96K miles. This is puzzling since...
