Starter Tool set - hand tools for professional work?

Hello everyone - apologies if this is not the right forum list, but it seemed most appropriate given the question... My son (26) has a new part-time opportunity to perform small-engine repair for a professional shop, but he must furnish his own tools. He currently does not own any tools, so he...

Is there a "shortage" of Mobil 1 Annual Protection 0W-20?

Greetings, I have four vehicles, all either Toyota or Lexus requiring 0W-20. I have chosen Mobil 1 Annual Protection 0W-20 as my "standard" oil I use whenever it's oil change time. This weekend, I went to three different Wal-Marts in my area. Normally I get the 5-quart jug. None of the three...

    Amsoil Signature 0W-20, 2015 Tacoma, 10.3K miles

This is the latest sample from my 2015 Tacoma, which I have owned since new. Looks OK to me, except for the trend of increasing aluminum. Is this a possible problem developing? Some Tacomas of this vintage have been known to make a whining noise when started up cold; the noise disappears after...

Mobil 1 Annual Protection and Dexos 1 Gen 2

I emailed the following question to Mobil to confirm Mobil 1 Annual Protection meets Dexos 1 Gen 2: Question: Does the new Mobil 1 Annual Protection product specifically meet the Gen 2 version of the Dexos 1 specification for the 0W-20 grade? Answer: Yes, Mobil 1 Annual Protection meets...

    2017 Lexus GS350, 3.5L V6, Factory Fill, 873 miles

Factory fill that I dumped early from my new GS-350. Happy to see no fuel dilution on this Direct-Injection engine. However, viscosity is pretty low even for a 0W-20. I re-filled with *gasp* Mobil 1 0W-20 Annual Protection.

    2017 Tundra, 5.7L, 1,000 miles, Factory Fill 0W-20

All, Just for thrills, I had a UOA on my 2017 Toyota Tundra 5.7L V8 performed. I expected to see elevated copper, which comes from the oil coolor, and elevated Silicon, which comes from the sealers Toyota uses.

    2015 Tacoma V6, Amsoil Sig. 5W-30, 9.9K miles

Here is the sixth UOA on my 2015 Toyota Tacoma V6, using Amsoil signature 5W-30 for 9,939 miles.

Toyota Transfer Gear Oil 75W VOA

All, If you own a recent vintage Toyota 4x4, this VOA should interest you. For the transfer case, Toyota specifies a very special oil for which Amsoil and RedLine do not have a substitute. You have to special order this fluid from Toyota, at a cost of about $55 a quart! I have provided this...

    Mobil 1 0W-20 Annual Protection VOA, TBN/TAN

Nothing to see here, folks, move along.... I present for your consideration a VOA of Mobil 1 0W-20 Annual Protection. Looks surprisingly normal. I suspect whatever it is that is different does not show up in a VOA.

Oil Choice with Direct Injection - Additives

Greetings, I am considering purchase of a 2017 Lexus GS350. It has a 3.5 liter V6 with Direct Injection. This will be my first vehicle with Direct Injection. I've been told the approach Lexus took with Direct Injection in this engine is that it is in fact a combination of direct injection and...

    03 Lexus, 5873mi, Amsoil Signature 5W-30

This one is pretty boring. Since I drive so few miles, I only change the oil on this vehicle once a year - this year I only went 5,873 miles in a single year. Looks pretty good to me, I could have gone longer.

    Power Steering UOA - 03 GS430, Mobil 1 ATF, 16K mi

I wasn't even sure which group to post this one in, I have never done a Power Steering UOA before. So here is the deal: I took my 2003 Lexus GS430 in to have brakes done. My son has a good friend he trusts for automotive work. He works for a Honda dealer, and is actually allowed to work on...

    Anyone having problems with Photobucket?

I've been using Photobucket.com for years to post images of my UOAs and other things without issue. Last night, I received two new UOAs I want to post to this forum, but I could not get photobucket to work. I had great difficulty getting the login page to respond, and when I finally got logged...

    2015 Tacoma 4.0 V6, 9.8K mi. Amsoil Signature 5W30

The following is the latest UOA on my 2015 Toyota Tacoma 4.0 V6. This oil was in use for 7.5 months, almost 10,000 miles. This nearly doubled my last UOA interval, and is double what the manufacturer recommends. Some interesting things in this UOA. First, some things that were flagged, but not...

    2015 Tacoma, 5183mi., Amsoil Signature 5W-30

I changed this oil and filter after this sample was taken. I know several of you are not happy with the short interval for this type of oil. But for the current interval, I am taking it out to 10,000 miles to see how it goes. I am using Mobil 1 M1-209 filters. The silicon is from sealers, so...

    2003 Lexus GS430, 5215 miles Amsoil Signature 5W30

OK - before anyone criticizes me on not going far enough on this oil - please bear in mind this oil was in service for nearly 13 months. Severe service - I only live 2 miles away from work, and this vehicle was the principle vehicle used to get back and forth to work. It would occasionally get a...

06 Tundra rear diff, Amsoil SVG 75W-90, 44K miles

Well, this UOA seems to indicate an increased amount of wear compared to previous samples, even taking into account the longer miles. I am not sure what might be causing it. I do not think this amount of iron is particularly excessive, I am just a bit surprised at the amount compared to previous...

06 Tundra Xfer Case, Amsoil SVG 75W-90, 44K miles

A great sample from my Transfer Case on my 2006 Toyota Tundra Limited 4WD Double-Cab V8. Looks good. I changed the oil, using SVG again, and plan to take this new fill until 60K miles or 4 years, whichever happens first, assuming I still have this vehicle by then.
