What gas do pre-1974 LEADED gas cars run?

I run AVGas (100LL) in my 1970 Mercury. With compression of 11.3:1, I get pinging if I try to use 93.

How often to get up to operating temp?

This is a great use case for something like a used Chevy Volt! They'd never use gas or worry about getting up to temp.

    Crashed the Volt this morning...

Sorry to see that. I'm afraid the Volt is a bit more expensive to repair than we expect. This deer hit I had with mine in 2015 ended up costing $9,500. I hope yours doesn't end up costing as much as mine.

    Filter vehicle reference

A friend of mine is getting rid of his stash. He's got filters for a 4-cyl 2009 Camry and a 4-cyl 2005 Accord. I don't have either of these cars and I don't know anyone personally with them (short of walking up to the many owners of these two common vehichles a parking lot!) Is there some...

    Keep it or junk it?

Parked outside for the last ten years. I'm out of garage spots. No wife to worry about. Tires are about 5 years old and have decent tread. If it's running, I'll likely take it to work one day a week, so the gas won't go stale and ~500mi/week on the Volt is adding up. Originally Posted By...

I do like it for the sentimental value and as a spare. Those are the only two things keeping it. I suspect if it were not my grandmother's it would be a straightforward decision. OTOH, I probably wouldn't keep it if the motor seized or something.

    Keep it or junk it?

So I have an old '88 Caprice and I need advice about fixing or junking it. Backstory: I have 4 cars, my daily is a 2013 Chevy Volt with 100K on it. I also have this '88 Caprice which is a tad sentimental because it was a hand-me-down from my grandmother. The other 2 are collector cars that...

    Considering a new car

It's almost always cheaper to repair the car, but then I saw what you said about the transmission and all of the other repairs, and I think your reasoning makes sense. Since it appears you don't put a ton of miles on your car, fuel mileage is less of a concern than someone that drives a lot...

Who's Going To Watch Las Vegas With Me?

I will be watching with my mom this afternoon. Not sure how much I can get online. Not to throw cold water on having a thread here, but you also might check out the reddit threads for each race. https://www.reddit.com/r/NASCAR/ These guys will toss up a "race thread" not long before the...

    '88 Caprice: valve stem seals

Thanks for all of the advice, folks. I think I will take it by my local shop and see what they quote me. I'm doing a 7500 mile OCI since I put 7 quarts in by that time. I used to do 5000 miles before it consumed so much.

    '88 Caprice: valve stem seals

My '88 Caprice (305) burns oil (a quart every 1000 miles), particularly on startup I get that puff of blue smoke meaning valve stem seals. Short of fixing the seals, which could get into a bit of money, (not something I want to take on myself) what would you do? Currently I'm still using up...

Why can't oil last longer than one year?

I have a Chevy Volt - the nice thing about this car is that the gas generator runs infrequently if you charge every night and just use it to commute to work. The owner's manual recommends changing the oil when prompted by the GM oil life monitor or 2 years - whichever comes first. The reason...
