    Question about oil change

I'll second that motion for a Fumota valve. I'm running them on both of my vehicles and can do an oil and filter change in under 10 minutes. And you don't have to worry about stripping the pan. I've been using these for 100K miles and no issues. I've heard folks complain about the Fram...

OilGuard does my testing, a 6 pack costs $54. This is the Honda vtec, 4 cylinder. I switched to M1 when I swapped out the oem oil at 5000mis. I picked up the M1 0W30 on clearance, ($2/Q for 200+ Quarts), when my stock runs out I'll switch to the new extended run and see what shakes out. I...

About 50/50 highway and city driving, ave 60 miles each weekday and 0 on the weekends, only a quarter of a quart in makeup oil, using oem oil and air filters, no additives other than a bottle of dry gas every other week in the winter. At 30K I switched over to 5W30 for the summer and changed...

I'm thinking the 3rd sample is a bad lab test. It was Nov - Mar time period. No additives other than an occasional bottle of dry gas into the tank. Starting at 5kmis I switched to M1, 0W30 in the winter for better cold starts and 5W30 in the summer months. Gas mileage is a consistent 21-23 in...

For some reason the Honda v6's seem to shed Al for awhile, it is trending down, but I agree it's higher than I would like. Regarding the coolant - 30kmis and I've added none and the level stays mid way between min and max. If the next UOA has high NA I'll need to dig into the issue, (it's...

Guys, thanks for the feedback, as always it's been insightful. The second UOA was done in the fall, late Nov, the third was done mid March. No changes to the engine, the car is 100% stock and no changes in my commute. Gas mileage took a dip, but that's the winter blend. No decrease in power...

I stretched the last OCI to 7500, iron, aluminum and silicon are up. Absolutely -0- makeup oil. I understand the SI, we see lots of sand and salt this time of the year. At 23K miles on the car, I would expect the AL to be dropping, not increasing. I know high AL is common on the Hondas. This car...

Folks, I just got the test results back for sample number 2. I'm using the old style, (large) OEM oil filter, running highway miles, 3 months on the oil and just under 6,000 miles. The engine is Honda's 3.5 liter V6, 240 horses. No makeup oil and with the recent -20 temps I'm liking the cold...

    M1, 0W30, 5500mi, 2003 Honda CRV w/21Kmi

Jay, I think the fuel issue was a bad test. The car has a 20 mile daily commute with very little idle time. If the 2nd test had fuel in it the car was going back to Honda for warrantee work. Sample 1 with fuel and no viscosity issues made no sense.

    Winter Tires

I live in the snow belt of NY state and have run snow tires religiously for the past 20 years. I currently have Firestone Winterforce on 3 cars, 2 Honda CRV's and a Honda Pilot. We haven't had much snow yet, but the few storms we have had the tires performed great. Prior to the Winterforces I...

Isn't 15w-40 motor oil a bit thick for mowers?

For almost 20 years I ran 15W40 in my 20 horse air cooled B&S Craftsman rider and I use the same in my 10 year old 6 horse walk behind. Never had a problem. The 15W40 was recommended by a small engine repairman I knew, with 40+ years of experience. I sold the rider and switched over to a diesel...

I have the same SUV, my copper was 66 at 10kmi, with 5000 miles on M1 0W30. I have another sample in queue, taken at 16Kmis. I think the high copper has been attributed to the oil cooler. My iron was 20, and SI was 30. Your numbers look great. Did they give you a TBN? My TBN was 8.1, that's why...

    2005 Odyssey - Comments?

"If Honda recommended the S2000 filter for the Odyssey, I'd use that." I did get the go ahead from my dealer to use the S2000 oil filter in my Pilot, (same engine as the Odyssey). They are almost twice as expensive as the normal Honda filters. I had reservations about using the tiny OEM...

My second UOA just came back. I was happy to see the fuel number go to 0. I'm going to run the OCI up to 7500 and retest. The V is my wife's daily commuter, about 40 miles/day, with a 50/50 mix of highway and city driving. No makeup oil and I'm using the small OEM oil filter. Thoughts? 1)...

No makeup oil, 10,000 miles on the Pilot, 5,000 miles on the M1 full synthetic, 0W30. The miles were 80%+ highway, with a 50 mile round trip daily commute. My concerns are the high SI, FE and CU. I checked my air filter, it's seated properly and is clean, I'm guessing these numbers are high...

No excessive idling. I've checked the air filter, it's clean and seated properly. I'll retest in 5000 miles and take 2 samples. If OilGuard comes back with high fuel again, I'll get another co to test the second sample.

Guys, Thanks for the feedback. The car is my wife's daily driver, with her 20 mile one way comute being half city and half highway. She's a conservative driver, (no stop light racing that I know of....). I changed to M1 at 5000 miles and this sample came from the 15000 mile oil change, (with...
