there is no thick of thin 30w

I don't post often, but i hear a lot of a thick or thin 30w. I realize that a 30 w has a range to fall between to be considered a 30w. I have talked with Mobil, Havoline and Castrol, and they all said the same thing. The oil is measured at 212f for the viscosity. If that temp is 213 or 211...

    Enery Conserv Mobil1 15w-50

I just saw that the 15w-50 silver cap 15w-50 (back by popular demand) has an EC rating. Does this mean it is Energy Conserving? I have been using it in my bike for 2000 miles, but next time i will use the Gold cap. I thought the silver cap was the old "red cap" that everyone like?

    help with 15w-50 M1

How many 15w-50 bottles does M1 have. I can find the gold cap, and the silver cap. Is the silver cap the old "red cap" version? Or does it have less of an additive package than the gold cap. I thought the gold cap would be better in bikes.

    Amsoil 20w-50 or m1 15w-50

I purchased a Triumph speed 4 a few months ago, and they and the dealers specify to use the Triumph oil made by Mobil 1 that is a 15w-50 viscosity. It is different than the "Gold cap". The viscosity at 100f and 212f match that of Amsoils 20w-50. 152cst and 20.7cst. The Gold cap is 138cst and...

    Fuel dilution

Are there any differences of what fuel dilution does to a straight weight vs. a multi-weight? I've heard that fuel breaks down viscosity improvers used in multi-weights. This is why boats with auto engines (inboards, I/O's)that are carbureted should use straight weights.

    I like straight weights

I tried Delo 15w-40 last year in my Ford v-8, and it worked ok. My pressures were pretty much the same as when i used sae 30. But, i just feel like i get better protection using an sae 30 and not a 15 weight oil that acts like a 40 weight at operating temps. Because it is a dino oil, it is a 15w...

    Help w/ JD models

I have the chance to buy a JD 111 ($500 friend) or an STX 38 ($850 JD dealer). They are both 1990's models. What is the difference in these, and which is better for mowing 3/4-1 acre? Pictures?

    140 degree oil

I happened to check my oil temp after driving home from work yesterday. The outside temp was 43f, distance traveled was 5 miles at 50 mph. When i got home i inserted a digital therm and it read 140f. Oil used was Rotella 15w-40. I started out in a 70f heated garage at work, so the oil only...

Mobil 1 and cold cranking specs

How come i can not find any cold cranking numbers for the Mobil 1 oils? Also, are the new EP oils different than the old regular M1? Anyone know the ccs numbers for 0w-30 and 5w-30?

    Can't use Delo 400

I just called Chevron, and he said i shouldn't use the SL Delo 400 15w-40 in my wet clutch because it now has friction modifiers in it. If is says ci-4 plus, it has friction modifiers in it. He also said the Supreme line will not work also. Even the 10w-40 and 20-50 have friction modifiers. I...

    Amsoil says M1 not synthetic

I over heard an Amsoil dealer at the State Fair booth telling a guy that Mobil 1 is not a true synthetic. He said since the Castrol lawsuit, that Mobil 1 has been 20% petroleum. Maybe this is true?

    Older Inboard Engines

I read this last week about this. If an engine was designed to run on leaded fuel, after a few years of it running on leaded fuel, the seats and valves have been coated and will be protected for up to 10000 miles (in a car). But, if you have the chance to put in a bottle of lead substitute every...

Maybe Fram's are not so bad?

I was at a car show, and 99% of the cars had Fram with the black grip end on them. Most of these motors looked modded out and rebuilt. I did see 3 Fram hp-1 (the good ones?) The remaining were some off brand (Carquest, ect)

    How about m1 5w-40?

Since my Amsoil 10w-40 went from 4.99 to 8.99, i want to move to something else in my '02 Honda vt750. Would M1 5w-40 do ok in a bike? The tech on the M1 line said not to use it. I don't want to use 15w-50 because i drive in cold weather (15f) in winter.

    Is it even possible?

Honda makes a GN4 5w-30 oil. Is it possible to have such a light oil that would work in a bike with a wet clutch? I want to use this stuff this winter when i ride at 20f and warmer. Has anyone used this stuff?

    Is high ash bad?

I am going to swith from sae 30 in my V-8 Ford inboard to a 15w-40. Shell and Chevron have 1.4% ash, and valvoline Durablend has 1.0%. Is there anything lower than 1% in 15w-40. I would feel comfortable with the Durablend, but it is hard to find. Chevron and Shell seem high. Is ash not good...

Oil pressure indicitave of engine mechanical fitness?

I've heard that when you shut down an engine, the pressure on the gauge show go down really slow. If it goes down fast, this mean worn bearings.

    Which clings better?

I did a test with an inclined piece of metal with a drop of M1 5w-30, Citgo Synthetic 10w-30, and Delo 400 sae 30. At room temp the next day, i could only see the straight weight oil on the inclined block. The 2 synthetics ran off. Is this because it was at room temps, or would this be differnet...

    Mixing viscosities doesn't work

I have heard this from some oil companies that mixing doesn't give you what you think. Here is something i found on google. "An oil's "weight" is molecular. Additives such as viscosity index improvers work to give oil different characteristics, but the fact remains. Pick up any vocational...

    Oil coolers on 454 Chevy's

Dennis Moore has always said to make sure your oil temp is at 200 or above. I have heard of some guys overcooling their oil. It must be nice and hot to lube correctly. Use a good straight 40 weight oil. They must be big block Chev's - right?
