    Best new car smell substitute?

I’ve tried chemical guys “new car smell” product, and I was disappointed. It smells more like lemon fused with dawn dishwashing soap. What’s a good plastic scented device I can use to bring me that sweet olfactory pleasure that I do not have access to right now? Oddly enough I’ve found cleaners...

Mystery oil filter. What is it?

This came out of a Toyota 2zr-fe from my 2010 Scion xD. I can’t find online what it might be. I think the first 6 digits are the date code. 154 is similar to the mobil 1 part number mc1-154a, but the mobil 1 oil filters do not look like this. I wish I could find out what brand.

The dangers of a long beard.

I was inspecting my car while it was running and noticed my beard (about 10 inches long) getting close to the pullies. I instantly pulled back and realized having a beard can be a problem when working on cars. Has anyone here ever had to take precaution due to facial hair or decided to forsake...

Busted control arm bolt. DIY or not?

I recently bought this car. It came like this. This bolt is normally torqued to about 101 ft lbs. I was thinking of using an irwin extractor bolt kit, but I think it may just fracture while trying to loosen it, compounding things further. I live in an apartment and have limited access to tools...

Scion xD with 168,000 miles - clunking sound over bumps

Hey all. I just bought a Scion xD with 168,000 miles. It has a very noisy clunk whenever going over bumps. The sound is impossible to replicate by slamming my weight against the car (front to back, right to left). The noise appears to be coming from the front left. I have tried gripping and...

Car Towed while still in Park. Damage?

Early this morning, I saw a hapless Toyota Camry being towed away for parking violation. The tow truck lifted the car from the rear of the car, pulled it out of the parking space 15 ft, dropped it, then circled around to tow and lift it from the front wheels. I’m wondering what happens to the...

Beater: Should I buy this car?

I’m changing jobs, which will require me to commute, (old job didn’t). So I’m looking for a cheap commuter car. 2010 Scion xD 167,000 miles I test drove it. Here’s what I found. Positives: 1 owner car. Carfax shows oil changes done roughly every 7-8k miles. Dealer services (pro or con?) No...

“Will It Run?” videos, seem suspicious to me.

Unless you live under a rock, you’ve seen at least one “will it run?” Video. A YouTuber introduces a chosen vehicle to take a roadtrip or just get running at all. Usually it’s in a junkyard or farm field - been sitting for years too. I used to highly enjoy watching these videos, until after...

Apartment dweller where it rains a lot - belt drive?

I live in an apartment, so cleaning a bike chain is a huge pain. Secondly I live in Florida where it rains daily all summer long. I’d like to bike to work, but the hassle of a dirty bike chain is somewhat daunting, so I have been looking at getting a Pioneer folding bike with a belt drive. They...

Drove around with 3/5 lug nuts for years

Shocking. I know. Utterly reprehensible. But to be honest, the Nissan dealer didn’t say anything after a 5 point inspection 2 weeks ago. And neither did the shady tire shop mechanic either that I went to last week. I only noticed because I just had a tire patch installed by a local mechanic...

Fingerprint starter scanner - would you buy?

Say in the future, car companies start implementing a finger scanner like an iPhone to protect against theft. So a push button start with finger scanner. You’d have to register every driver. Assuming the software was robust and not easily circumvented, would you be interested in such a feature?

AC blend doors vacuum or motors?

This is so silly, but my coworker and I had a fervent disagreement. He told me most cars today use vacuum to actuate the hvac blend doors. I told him he is out of his mind. HVAC blend doors use stepper motors to change the blend doors. Who is right? I can’t find obvious answers on a cursory...

Volkswagen Beetle. A classic car on a budget?

I’ve always wanted a classic car. I just don’t have the disposable income to afford one. The closest thing I have is a ‘91 Previa, but parts are not really available for it. Many important parts are no longer available. So once it dies I think I want to switch to something else. American...

    Paint protection. It’s all futile.

Water beading. Looks nice, but seriously? What scientific evidence is there that water beading is more than wishful thinking? And UV protection? Oh please. I’ve watched the videos with UV meters. Max was like 3% UVA reduction. Oxidation? I’ve seen no controlled study on this either. It all...

Do manufacturers restock parts for older vehicles?

I thought my old Toyota Previa might be due to the scrapyard soon because OEM engine and tran mounts were no longer available. I had checked numerous websites years ago, but there were no OEM mounts for sale then. While the vibrations now are tolerable, I bet the old OEM mounts on there now...

Accelerator pedal stuck. Just turn off car?

I’ve never been in a situation like this. It’s great he’s ok, but if I were to be in this situation, couldn’t you just turn the car off? I suppose that’s what you would do with a key, but what about a push button car? I want to know more about this rare situation.

Moving to Florida and UV damage

Florida is too expensive to afford a house with a garage or even a carport for my income. So I’m moving to a condominium with no covered parking. I am considering a car cover for my seldom used weekend car. I’ve heard horror stories of swirls and scratches inflicted on paint due to car covers...

Do you ever MISS car work?

Ever since Covid, I’ve found my hands longing for the wrench. I don’t drive nearly as much as I used to. I’ve been reduced to one insured car, so one car that doesn’t get many miles means very little work to do. I know it sounds crazy, but when I see my neighbors working on cars or forum posts...

    Car Cover Polypropylene. Breathable?

I haven't bought a car cover in a long while. I'm looking to buy one for my temporarily retired commuter car. My wife and I are pulling my commuter car off insurance to save $1000+ year on car insurance. Browsing what's popular, it seems a lot of the mid-tier car covers are made of something...
