Frequent WOT runs are good for an engine?

Here is something interesting I just read over on another forum by a well respected member and was wondering what you guys thought- Is this a good idea, will it help maintain a cleaner engine, promote less oil consumption, ect...? So is it good to do WOT blasts down the highway and what could...

    GM 3800 oil for winter?

I have a 92 LeSabre with the 3800 V6 with about 84,000 miles on it and I was wondering what weight is ok to use this winter. Right now I have regular SuperTech 10W30 and a SuperTech filter on it. Im up north so it's starting to get pretty cold. It was about 8F outside this morning. It usually...

    Weird RPM increase?

I know this probably has nothing to do with oil lubrication at all but I thought I'd throw this out there as I'm stumped on what it is. Ever since I bought my car a few months ago the car has idled at exactly 850 RPM when in P or N and idled at exactly 750 RPM when in gear. About a week ago I...

    Can't use 5W-30 above a certain temperature?

Why is it that in some vehicle manuals it says you can use 10W-30 from 0F - 100F+ and you can use 5W-30 from -0F - 60F? The owners manual even says DO NOT USE 5W-30 ABOVE 60F. Why can't a 5W-30 be used when its 75F outside? What about using an even lighter wieght like 0W-30? I'm just wondering...

    Conventional 10W-30 or a diesel 15W-40?

Is a thinner oil or a thicker oil more desirable for an OHC vehicle because I've heard that pushrod engines can run a little bit thicker oil than an OHC engine. Do you think I could use a 15W40 diesel oil in and OHC engine with 153,000 miles? I'm might try it to see if it cleans out any deposits...

    Which combination would you choose?

Out of these six oils and oil filters which combination would you choose for your vehicle? Base the oils on the base oil (group I, II, II+, ect...) and the additive package it has. Or on past personal experiences and the one you would use. Base the oil filter on flow, filtration, reputation, one...

    Purolator Premium Plus or SuperTech?

Would you rather use a regular Purolator Premium Plus or a SuperTech oil filter? Why would choose the one you do? Which one has better filtration efficiency and flow? Thanks everyone.

    Purolator and cardboard endcaps

Does anyone know if the Purolator L14670 oil filter has metal endcaps or cardboard endcaps? The cross references for the Purolator would be the FRAM PH-16 and the SuperTech ST16. They are short oil filters but really wide. Anyway just wondering if they had cardboard endcaps or not. Oh and for...

    Oil brand and weight recommendation

1996 Chrysler LHS 3.5L SOHC V6 153,000 miles Engine has never been opened up but there is a reasonable amount of varnish seen when looking through the oil fill hole on the valve cover. I don't think I have any sludge problems but just a good amount of varnish. Anyway the manual recommends 5W-30...

    Why is 10W40 so bad?

Here's a good question. Why is 10W40 so bad? I know people say that since it has a larger spread than a 10W30 (30 points instead of 20) that it can break down a lot faster and cause sludge, ect... But my arguement to that would be this: almost all Honda, Kawasaki, and Suzuki motorcycles...

    I like Valvoline All Climate!

There I said it. Why is Valvoline thought of to be such a weak and inferior oil? I know people say it has a weak additive package that is missing a few things but what exactly. Also people with UOA's have shown some pretty good results using All Climate. What about all the people that say they...

    Havoline vs. Chevron

Is Havoline motor oil really exactly the same as Chevron motor oil? No one can seem to give a clear answer. Also I just used Havoline a few days ago and it looks foggy when it comes out of the bottle. Has anyone else noticed this? It doesn't look crisp and clear like most other oils I've seen...

    Purolator PureOne's

I know that some of the regular Purolator Premium Plus have cardboard endcaps like the L10111 (ACDelco cross-reference PH-47). I was wondering if the L10111 has cardboard endcaps, does the PureOne PL10111 have cardboard endcaps? Just thought it would be good to know if any PureOne's have...

Rate the SuperTech oil and filters

On a scale of 1 - 10, with 10 being the best, what would you rate the SuperTech dino oil? What about SuperTech oil filters? What are your reasons for doing so? Thanks everyone

    SuperTech vs. Valvoline

I have heard that SuperTech 10W30 oil has a better additive package than conventional Valvoline 10W30. Is this in anyway true? BTW has anyone ever heard of Northland Motor Oil? They are based out of Waterloo, Iowa.

Will SuperTech breakdown in high heat/stress?

I am currently using SuperTech 10W30 dino oil and a SuperTech oil filter. If I beat the living crap out of the car like you would not believe (always have the pedal to the floor, bouncing off the rev-limiter, ect...) will this cheap "house brand" motor oil breakdown faster and more than a...

    Defense oil filters

Anyone ever heard of Defense oil filters? They are sold at my local Thiesens along with the huge wall of orange filters they have there. They seem to be the exact same as the FRAM's and the box even says they are made by Honeywell. They are painted white with black print on them. The baseplate...

    Brand doesn't matter

I have never seen an oil related failure do to a certain oil or filter. I think that I can just pick whatever is the cheapest I can possibly find (as long as it meets the SL and GF-3 ratings) and as long as the filter isn't a FRAM, and that would work just fine. I doubt I can get any more life...

    Brand loyalty

Should brand loyalty be a thing of the past? Can I get longer engine life buy using more expensive oil and filters? Personally I think engine longevity depends more on the design, precision of assembly, and quality of materials then the brand of oil and filters used. If you use an SL and GF-3...
