    Bloody Marys

For some reason, and I'm definitely not alone in this, a good bloody mary is a common Sunday drink for me. Just seems to work with a noon kickoff football game. I have a favorite pre-made mix called Zing Zang. It's been the best one I've tasted so far. I am going to try the Harley-Davidson mix...

    Best oil for 2003 V-Rod?

I just picked this one up, and the place I bought it from had changed the oil & filter, but I don't know what brand or even what weight they installed in it. I know these engines tend to beat their oil mercilessly due to the common lubrication between the engine and tranny. I have a feeling...

Torn over what snowmobile oil to use

Hey all, Been a long time since I visited this site. I recently acquired a 1997 Polaris Indy 500 (carb, not EFI) that's in remarkable shape. The previous owner had used nothing but genuine Polaris oil in it since new. It now has about 5000 miles on it, and still pops 125# in both cylinders...

    Chrysler 42RE fluid recommendations?

Hey all, just wanted to pick some brains about what I should run in my '04 Grand Cherokee 4.0L with the 42RE tranny. Chrysler of course says ATF+4 only, but I wanted to run Schaeffer's ATF which meets ATF+4 specs. Should I stay with genuine Mopar ATF+4, or is Schaeffer's as good if not better? I...

What are you having for dinner?

Tonight it's kind of rainy and clammy outside, so some sort of "comfort food" sounds really good, and just kick back and watch a movie or something. I'm going to make lasagna. I haven't had that in ages, and it sounds really good. I'm going to cheat a little for the sauce though...I got some...

Are "professional grade" products really better?

Just curious what your opinions were. I normally get my detailing supplies from the truck that comes around to service the dealerships and detail shops in the area, and I've been very pleased with nearly every product I've bought. I've used Auto Magic products pretty faithfully till the...

    Pennzoil Platinum or Schaeffer's?

Just gleaning some opinions on what would be the better oil for my '04 Explorer. We've always used Schaeffer's in the race car, and I've used it many times in my personal vehicles. In fact, if it weren't for this site giving me new ideas, I'd probably still be using it exclusively! Right now...

Any alternatives to BMW SLF auto trans. fluid?

If I can find an acceptable substitute, I'll use it. This is for a '95 BMW 540i with a ZF 5HP30 tranny. It's just been completely rebuilt, and according to the tranny builder, he claims the updated parts now require the use of special BMW tranny fluid, known as SLF or special lubricant fluid...

If you make/use biodiesel, don't tell anyone!

These guys from WI are being taxed on their homemade biodiesel! Unbelieveable. MANITOWOC — Two Manitowoc men received letters from the state notifying them that they would owe taxes on their homemade fuel three days after they appeared in an article in the Herald Times Reporter on March 10...

    1990 Cavalier...A sucess story.

My friend called me last week to tell me just how long the original clutch will last in a '90 Cavalier. You ready for this? 316,977 miles! The pressure plate finally broke and the clutch will no longer release. That's not all...It's still on its original head gasket too! She bought the car...

    Lawn-Boy Duraforce requires TC-W3?

I found this somewhat odd. The new "Generation II" Lawn-Boy branded oil is TC-W3 rated, and upon verifying its use in my DuraForce's manual, it specifically states that no oils except those rated TC-W3 should be used in this engine. Doesn't that go against what we all have been saying about...

    Briggs & Stratton Intek

My first Ariens EZ Rider zero-turn mower had this engine on it. IMHO it's a piece of ****. Blew a head gasket with less than 100 hours on it, and never had the power I'd consider normal for an engine rated at this HP. The smog-friendly too-lean carb was borderline unacceptable. You'd engage the...

When is an oil pressure gauge not an actual gauge?

When it's a PCM-driven pointer that doesn't even measure actual oil pressure, but instead uses pre-programmed tables based on coolant temperature and RPM to indicate a "percieved" pressure reading. I was abslolutely disgusted with how badly cars have been "dumbed down" for the idiots. The...

    NASCAR and Japanese brands

Help me clarify a few things regarding Toyota's recent entry into the Craftsman Truck Series and next year's Nextel Cup entry. I was always under the impression that the race car (or truck) had to have a "production" block for its engine. I never knew Toyota had a pushrod V8 ever offered in any...

    Emeril's "essence"

If you ever watch Emeril Live on Food Network, you'll see he uses a spice he calls "essence" a lot in his dishes. I did a quick Google, and found what it is... Here ya go: 2 1/2 tablespoons paprika 2 tablespoons salt 2 tablespoons garlic powder 1 tablespoon black pepper 1 tablespoon onion...

Twin cylinder engines--V, opposed, or inline?

What do you prefer for a small-ish garden tractor? I see most, if not all, manufacturers are going to a V-twin configuration, but the ones that I've looked at on new machines from Briggs & Stratton and Kohler aren't all that impressive, IMHO. The Kohler Command 25 that I ran a while back seemed...

New refrigerant that replaces both R12 and R134A?

Tell me what you think of this stuff... http://www.maxifrig.com/ It looks too good to be true, and I just want to find out if it is. Also, there's no MSDS listed on the site, so I really can't see what it is to determine if it's going to work. Any input is appreciated.

Lubegard Red is Tranny Heroin ?

With my Chrysler 45RFE tranny running synthetic Mopar ATF+4, cleanliness should be a non-issue. I'd be extremely leary of putting anything besides the specified fluid in these. They're incredibly touchy to fluid properties.

Kind of a dumb ARX question

Normally I can follow instructions pretty good, but something left me a little confuzzled. If I'm going to be doing the 2-bottle cleaning procedure, do I add the 2nd bottle of ARX to the oil in the "completion stage", or run that a full 2000 miles then drop it and add the ARX to new oil and...

Confused about different versions of M1

Last time I was over at Wal-Mart, I noticed they had 3 different versions of Mobil 1 5w30 on the shelf. The regular version, the Extended Performance, and Truck & SUV. I also noticed that only the regular and EP meet GM 4718M, and that the EP and Truck/SUV met another GM spec that I'd never...
