Engine oil accidently added into transmission

I appreciate all the suggestions. As mentioned above, don't know how someone puts engine oil into the transmission, but we've all done goofy stuff at one time or another. I've personally lost 5 Qts of motor oil onto the garage floor years ago by forgetting to install the drain plug. Anyway, the...

Engine oil accidently added into transmission

Hello all. Had a relative call and ask what to do about this. Car is a Toyota Corolla auto trans. He evidently added 1/2 qt of motor oil into the transmission. Got confused I guess. The engine hasn't been started yet, so it hasn't circulated/mixed. I suggested draining the trans and refilling...

Blue smoke from '54 Olds 88

I agree with Jim....start with the seals first since it's easier. But, it's been my experience that bad seals show up as smoke on start up after sitting overnight. Once the "leaked" oil has burned off the smoke should stop.....usually within minutes. Cool project btw.

anybody use diesel oil in gas engines???

I haven't formed an opinion on it yet. Just passing on thoughts from those I visit with. As I understand it they are thinking that the lack of additives in modern oils may be in some part responsible and that diesel oils may give more of what the older engines need. I suspect at least some of...

anybody use diesel oil in gas engines???

I visit several classic corvette forums. There has been an ongoing problem with cam failures for years now with the old flat tappet cams. After a lot of discussion it seems that most now believe the problem is oil related. From what I can tell probably a third of these folks are now using diesel...

    Clunk in drivetrain

Lots of good ideas here. U-joints would be my first check. On some of the older GMs there is a differental mounting bushing (also called snubber bushing) that is well known for causing clunks. Not sure if the newer cars are still set up this way. Just a thought....

    72 vette radiator cleaning!

I personally would first try whatever flushes you can with the radiator still in the car. Pulling a radiator on any C-3 series vette is a major chore.

    Vacuum pump

I appreciate the replies. I've searched around on Ebay and various other places. Seems that comparable pumps (similar specs) go for about $250 to $350. I took it by a local HVAC shop for some opinions. The guys there said it is better than what they currently use. One of the guys said he had...

    Vacuum pump

I was recently given a vacuum pump by a relative that was cleaning out a storage room. I don't really have a need for it so am thinking of selling it. Problem is I'm not sure what it's worth. Searching the net has come up empty. It was made by Thermal Engineering. Not sure how old, but looks to...

    Another emissions (smog) question

I totally agree about the hoses....or anything else rubber. I've replaced maybe half the hoses over the years. I'm currently restoring (my hobby) a car that turned 32 years old in April. It spent about 15 years stored in a barn. I've replaced pretty much every piece of rubber on the whole car...

    Another emissions (smog) question

Thanks Quest, yes I was aware of the pinging issue with hotter plugs. I was just looking for some "shots in the dark" before I did my free re-test. I just went up one click on heat range, and went ahead and set my timing to specks. ....and, just to update....did my re-test and the numbers...

    Another emissions (smog) question

Gary, here in Texas the only total exemption from smog check is for cars 25 years and older. Anything under 25 yrs. has to be smogged. If the car has less than 5K miles since the last check it can apply for a low mileage waiver....provided at least $100 has been spent (on parts) trying to pass...

    Another emissions (smog) question

Thanks guys. Very helpful thoughts. After reading the replies here and studying this site http://www.aircare.ca/index.php?repinfo-ere-causes.php it appears that I do indeed have a rich condition, although zstalker makes a good point also. The exact numbers? I'll use the high speed test (25mph)...

    Another emissions (smog) question

Thanks Jimbo.....actually, this old truck doesn't have an 02 sensor. Not sure what year they started putting them on these trucks. You've confirmed what I thought I had heard....that too advanced was bad, and retarded was OK. Maybe I should just leave it where it is. Appreciate the reply..

    Another emissions (smog) question

I've heard that timing being off can cause emissions problems. I've also heard that being too far advanced is usually the problem. The question is....could too far retarded throw things off as far as emissions? I should be at 8* BTDC and am at 4*. Some background....85 S-10 truck. 2.8 V-6. 156K...

What you need to set aside for retirement

"Does anyone know a good calculator to say in todays dollars what you'd like to live with/year when you retire? My wife/I put dutifully at least 12% of total income into our retirement. We are 34 and collectively have $115,000 in retirement but not really sure if using this in itself will be...

    Timing instructions

Pinging would seem to indicate too much advance.....maybe back off a couple of degrees. As far as the heating issue....should be fiarly easy to locate a BB radiater. Or check with this place http://www.dewitts.com/ . Finding a stock fan and clutch should be no problem either. Do you know how...

    Timing instructions

There is a guy on the corvette forums (Lars Grimsrud) who has published a tech paper on setting timing on Chevy engines for max. performance. It essentially envolves lighter advance weight springs and probably a different (than stock) vacuum can. Having an adjustable timing light (like you have)...
