Where were you 5 years ago?

Today is the 5'th anniversary of the big Great Lakes-area blackout. 50 million people were out of power for several days before they got the grid completely back up and running. I was at work when the place went dark. I was in charge of about 60 computer systems. We had about 20 minutes before...

    Troy-bilt 29cc 4 stroke trimmer - thumbs way up!

I got my father's day gift early this year. Last weekend, I was using my 10 year old 2 stroker trimmer while my wife and son were playing on the deck. This old trimmer has been notoriously hard to start all it's life. I've chalked it up to a bad carburetor design, but it's always been a pain...

    TeraDisc

I just found this on Digg. This company in Israel has managed to fit 1 TB (TeraByte) on a single CD-sized disc. That's 20 times what a Blu-ray disc and over 200 times a typical single-layer DVD.

Radioactive boy scout - death wish?

This guy must have a death wish. He got a merit badge in the boy scouts for an atomic energy project where he actually tried to build a viable reactor. Now he's in the news again for stealing smoke detectors for the radioactive material inside. What a nutcase! Link to news article More about...

News Flash: Luxury cars are expensive to fix

Link to article. The IIHS is at it again. I'll reserve comment for now as I want to see if I'm the only one who thinks the way I do, but what do you all think about the methodology of this testing? The article includes a video of the actual tests.

    Spooky Cat

This cat knows when you're going to die. He lives at a nursing home and will warn the staff when there's less than 4 hours remaining. Check it out. P.S. I know the cat-haters here will eat this up, but please be respectful. Personally, I think that getting a warning before a loved one turns...

"Who Killed Electric Car" director admits bias

I don't know how many of you heard about the movie "Who Killed the Electric Car", but it was basically a GM bashfest over their failed Saturn EV1 electric car program. I found an interesting article this morning about that movie. The idea for the article came when the author was speaking to a...

    Brake Pull

I have a 2000 Chevy Monte Carlo SS with a brake pull. Whenever I hit the brakes, it pulls moderately to the right. I'm pretty sure I know what's going on mechanically, but there's something I don't understand. I had the right-front caliper sieze up on me a while ago (it wasn't applying brake...

Anyone hear of Buffalo network products?

I'm considering buying a wireless router and PC Card made by Buffalo technologies. My current wired router is a Linksys, but they've been getting a bad rap with the newer versions of the WRT54G. Here are some links: Wireless Router PC Card

I wonder if there's anything to this?

This company has supposedly developed a new means to store electricity using ceramic powder coated in Aluminum oxide and glass. It's supposed to charge very rapidly, store enough power to cover 500 miles and not be confined to sub-compact-sized vehicles. They're keeping things under a tight lid...

    Yerba Mate, anyone?

I got a bag of Yerba Mate, which is a kind of South American tea, from my brother-in-law when he traveled to Venezuela (or was it Argentina?) a couple years ago. I just tried the stuff recently and wasn't impressed to put it nicely. Maybe I didn't make it right, but how do you screw up tea? I...
