Time to dump the break in oil and move onto the next....

I'm currently partially restoring a 1962 GMC K1000 Suburban, and fixing up my 1972 Norton 750 Commando. Rebuilt the flathead in the 1949 Mercury I had, and had a BSA 441 Victor Special.

Time to dump the break in oil and move onto the next....

Thanks for this. I've only been a mechanic since the 1960's and was an automotive machinist at one point.

Time to dump the break in oil and move onto the next....

I helped a buddy rebuild a 289 Ford in his Donzi Sweet 16 boat. He broke it in on the trailer and then parked it for the winter. In the spring he jacked up part of the Volvo outdrive before it even hit the water and had to pull the engine. He found some rust in the cylinders and we concluded the...

Fuel dilution - how harmful, how much wear?

If you can smell gasoline on your dipstick, are you causing increased wear? Does some fuel evaporate out of the oil during normal running or extendeded driving if more isn't being added? What percentage of fuel dilution causes increased wear? Would you say engine oil is fairly tolerant to fuel...

    Oil for a flathead Ford

I ran Valvoline 10W40 in the 8BA Ford motor in my 1949 Mercury coupe. 10W30 or 15W40 HDEO would be my choice today.

Overfilled my 2006 BMW 530I. Would oil level monitoring system indicate overfill?

I looked at owner's manual and it says overfilled is a possible warning when oil level is checked through I Drive. So I suppose I'm good since the indicator says "Max"

Overfilled my 2006 BMW 530I. Would oil level monitoring system indicate overfill?

Couldn't hardly see the oil level in the thin window on 5L Castrol Edge 0W40 bottle, and accidentally overfilled by 3/4 quart. That's 7-3/4 quarts in a system that normally says full with 7 quarts. I did drain it quite thoroughly and let it sit with the drain plug out for several hours. The oil...

2003 Silverado transfer case fluid choices

Already did the pump rub kit, that was the last fluid change.

2003 Silverado transfer case fluid choices

My 2003 4WD Silverado 4.8 I bought new has 62K miles and I've got several choices for a transfer case fluid change, the third change since new. It is a manual transfer case. I rarely use 4WD. I have all these fluids already: Autotrak II, TES 295, Red Line D4. The Autotrak II I have no other...

When choke is applied, what circuit flows fuel?

I rebuilt the Stromberg WW on my 1961 GMC V6 305 4WD Suburban and post rebuild, it would run fine, but I had to prime it to get it to start. I took it apart again, and found debris in the screw that holds down the accelerator pump nozzles. The hollow screw is also the fuel passage for the...

    Oil Recommendation - 64 Chevy 283

Beautiful! What's the color called? I want to paint mine either light blue or this blueish green seafoam color. I think that is called Seafoam Green and is a stock Chevrolet paint color.

Trans fluid change through return line

This cooler line pump out used to be called the "Hoot" method. I did it at 25 and 50K miles on my 2003 Silverado that now has 62K miles. I used TES 295 Transynd fluid both times. I pumped 12 quarts through each time.

ZF Lifeguard 9 compatibility with transmissions that use ZF Lifeguard 8 or Mopar 8&9

I'm still trying to figure out if I can use Lifeguard 8 in my Lifeguard 6 application BMW 530I, as I have a stock of Lifeguard 8.

How bad were oils in the 1980’s?

"Planned obsolescence has been around a long time." I've heard Ford studied cars in junk yards to learn what was overbuilt and lasted too long. Maybe in the 1930's

Hairyest moment at Sedalia Mo car race 8/21

posted August 22, 2022 08:36 AM At the last night of the Missouri state fair in Sedalia, they held 410 Sprints, B Modifieds, and Show Me Vintage car races. B Modifieds are lined up for a heat race start, and the green flag is on the way down, and they are accelerating for the start in turn 4...

Why does my boat engine specify 25w-40

A factor I don't think yet considered is engine installation application. When Mercruiser, Indmar, Crusader, or Pleasurecraft ship an engine, they don't know what boat it's going in or how it will be operated. They must allow that it's going in a cruiser or workboat that will run at 75 percent...

    Fuel quality 1984 vs today

I wonder how fuel quality has changed during the time I've owned my 1984 Ski Nautique with a 351 Windsor. I've never had any memorable fuel issues, octane always has seemed adequate, and despite alarmist warnings that lead removal would cause valve recession, I've noticed no problems. The advice...

Marine engine mystery - cooling system debris in oil pan

The motor was completely torn down and there was no signs of flaked off corrosion anywhere other than the cooling system.

Marine engine mystery - cooling system debris in oil pan

Helped a buddy pull a Holman-Moody 302 Ford out of his 1970 Donzi sweet 16 yesterday. He had already pulled the heads and manifolds, so we pulled the block assembly and took it apart. In the oil pan was about a half a cup of apparent cooling system debris, iron oxide chunks looking like corroded...
