    Synthetic Oil "Groups"

For years I have used and still do, Red Line motor oil. Early on, I heard it was a "Group 5" synthetic oil. What I do not understand is what defines an oil's "group," and wither one is chemically better than another. Yes, I do understand certain properties of an oil, like HTHS, viscosity index...

Any harm in using thicker oil?

My Toyota Tacoma uses 0W-20 engine oil, a VERY light viscosity. It's great for very cold temps, but what about nominal temps? I want to change to a 5W-30 as a better warm temp oil (80 degree summers, 40 degree winters) up here in western Washington (Seattle area). It's a 2017 model still under...

Why No "SN" for Redline Oil

I have tried to get an answer from Redline, but after 2 - 3 weeks still no answer. Does anyone know why Redline does not specify SN on their oils? Does it have anything to do with a major change in their additive package (something put in or taken out)?

    Job Aptitude

From West Texas: A young applicant at a sheriff's office was in his final job assessment for a deputy's position. Sheriff says, "Your tests are all excellent, and your background check is fine. We have one more test for you though, an aptitude test." The sheriff takes out a service pistol and...

    A JOYOUS THANKSGIVING TO ALL

I know; not the proper place for this, and Helen can kick it off if necessary, but... I wanted to thank you gearheads for giving me and others your knowledge, experience, and of course, your opinions. I have been racing (drags) since the late 60's and still learn things today. Some of you must...

    Moly vs Boron

They are both anti-wear, with moly having been around the longest (?), but cost aside, does anyone know if one is "better" at its job than the other? (Is it boron or borate?)

    Beta Ratios

Sometime ago, I posted the beta ratios of Purolator's PureONE, and quite a "discussion" began. I do not want to rehash that, but, I would like to ask if you have beta data on your favorite filter (WIX, ST, NAPA, Fram (hahaha) etc), that is not heresay but you can quote a source, let's see it...

    DATING VS LEATHER SEATS

This happens to be a true story, involving me (unfortunatly). In my late 50's, divorced for years, I decided to give these dating sites (like eharmony) a try. It took quite a while, but eventually they found a lady willing to give me a chance, and a date was arranged. My vehicle is an 07 Ford...

    I JUST DON'T GET IT!

Over the last few days, I have been trying to figure out how to present this to you guys without causing an arguement. But as my ex-wife used to say, "You just can't help yourself." In one manner or another, the object of cost always is put out there, weither it be oil(s) or filters. Often the...

That Oil w/the Dye In It.

JUST PASSING THIS ON: The RP SAE 5W30 part # 01530 is a gasoline rated oil and as such - TBN is not a relevant value as a TBN test is important for measuring the remaining base additive capacity to neutralizing the sulfur that used to be present in diesel fuel. Since sulfur has been removed...

    ATF Lines; In vs Out

I am going to install a Magnefine ATF filter in my auto trans line. Problem I have is figuring out which line is out, and which is in. My 07 Ranger has a factory aux cooler installed out by the radiator, if that helps/hurts. While I'm bothering you, same question about my power streering, when I...

    Which Line

I have and am going to install a Magnefine in-line ATF filter. My problem is I can not tell which line is out vs in. On my 07 Ranger, it comes with a factory aux cooler up by the radiator. So before I go cutting a metal tubing line, how can I be sure?

    RED LINE AND WATER

FYI (yeah, again): Thank you for contacting Red Line Oil, our oils are designed and suitable for extended drain intervals, once past warranty we recommend a drain interval of 10 to 18,000 miles or at least once a year. The lower molecular weight esters tend to be hydroscopic, our oils use...

    FYI - K&N

For whatever it's worth: Thanks for contacting K&N. The K&N HP-2010 is a 5 micron oil filter but it is most efficient between 10-20 micron range where its tested to achieve 99% efficiency. I do not have the beta ratio available from a multi-pass test but I'll email our engineering department...

    How High Moly

Concerning the amount of moly in today's oils add-pack, is 950ppm considered "high?"

    FORD's Magnefine Filter

Most of you are familiar with the automatic transmission filter by Magnefine. I believe they are a BITOG sponsor. On their web site, I have read where they have worked with Ford and Chysler on certain things, and I think they say that their filter is endorsed by them. I simply passed over this...

    GUYS - - - HELP!

Got a rather verbal shoutfest going on here at work, with a female coworker. She makes the statement that all synthetic oils are the same, just "some are prettier than others," and "Men think that just because I'm a woman they can sell me anything about cars." When I told her that not only are...
