Those with 150,000 miles or more, check in

'86 SAAB 900 Turbo, 172K, M1 10W/30 w/ 5K OCI's since new. No oil consumption, just a little weepage at the rear main. Mech. looked at it with a borescope at 140K and said cyls. looked brand new.

Oil changes on a rarely driven car

I also use Klotz Uplon as an upper-cylinder lubricant, goes in at a 1/2-oz. per gal. Maybe not necessary, but a little extra protection.

Oil changes on a rarely driven car

I have a '94 Saab 900SE turbo that's a second car that I'm trying to keep nice, so it gets about 3000mi./yr, mostly in the summer. I use Redline 5W/40 and change it once every 8-9 months. I never see any drastic drop in TBN or anything else abnormal in a UOA that gives me any concern. In the...

    Amsoil 5w40 Euro

Birdy poop. G.I. Joe's, a sporting goods/automotive chain here in the NW (don't know where else they might be), sells the full AMSOIL motor oil line on the shelf.

    The Great Redline Amsoil comparison

I've got a Saab turbo, and I've been about the most conflicted guy on the planet since I started reading this forum! I've been using M1 10W-30 for years, but as a result of what I've read here, I switched to Amsoil, then NEO, and finally to Redline 5W-40. I swear that's where I'm staying...for...

What do the Taxi Companies Run?

Just about every late-'80's - mid-'90's Town Car I've ever seen leaves a belch of blue smoke every time the driver hits the gas. Judging by the typical blue-haired driver. I'm betting most have lower-than-average miles on their small Ford V8. They may be suffering from poor maintenance but...

    How does Auto-Rx work?

Running the first cycle in my Corolla, and I was wondering: what's in this stuff that makes it so good? Not talking proprietary secrets, just in general terms. The bottle was cold and it was REALLY thick, and the MSDS says "lanolin esters". The website says that he wants you to use dino oil so...

Overheating how does it affect oil??

Had the same experience with my Saab 900SE. Head gasket rupture is the worst-case scenario, but luckily I avoided that and from what you described, you're probably ok. Your shop can test for that after they fix the belt (make sure they replace that doggone tensioner too, or you'll lose another...

    Amsoil Lower Engine temps.

I had a similar experience with my daughter's recent purchase, a '94 Accord. I had driven it around a couple days and had a pretty good idea where the temp needle was resting - a little low, which I later found out was due to a stuck thermostat, which basically meant the engine temp was finding...

    NEO UOA

I was enthusiastic about this oil, but finally abandoned it after 500 miles. Why? After seeing the VOA mentioned above, I had Blackstone do one for me on the batch I was using. My VOA showed Lead:61, about 1/3 the level of the one posted. So it seemed like I'd have to do a VOA on every batch to...

What do you think about THIS one?

Ok, a guy posts on a Saab forum I frequent, that he's bought a car (a 2001 Saab 9-3) at auction through a friend, and now he's wondering whether he's looking at an engine rebuild. It's unclear whether he can back out of the auction deal, but here's his problem: "I just bought the car through a...

2 cycle oil for your car?

I use Klotz Uplon in the 4-stroke vehicles that don't get used much. http://www.klotzlube.com/Merchant2/merchant.mv?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=KS&Category_Code=AUTO_ADDITIVES Probably unnecessary but it makes me feel better.

M1 0W-40 or Red Line 5W-30 in a Porsche Cayenne Turbo?

The turbo's will be fine. We're talking about good-quality, clean 5W-30 used on a short interval. Pretty rough on the guy. Wish I could afford a nice rig like that.

    Neo 0w-5 is truly a 5wt.

I'm running NEO 10W/30 in my Saab turbo right now, but I've only got 500 mi. on it and I don't know if I'm gonna stick with it. I had a VOA done (after seeing someone else's VOA), and they both showed a lot of a lead compound as an additive. It would be difficult to tell from a UOA if I had...

Car parked the whole week, then driven once. need advice

In the mid-80's I bought a new Toyota pickup, one of the last carbureted ones. If the motor was cold, it had a fast idle of 2400 rpm! I thought, this can't be right, so I checked the shop manual and sure enough, fast idle setting spec was 2400-2700 rpm. I cut it down to about half that. I use...

    Dipstick vs. Owner's Manual

I'd go with the dipstick. My manual states 5.0 qts. for my engine, high level mark on the dipstick is actually a little over 4. Everyone I've talked to says, if you go any more than 1/2 qt. overfilled, your putting excessive pressure on the seals.

    What about NEO?

I don't drive the car it's in very much, but my initial observation with the 10W-30 is that my engine is quieter than it than it's ever been on M1 or Amsoil ATM. No seal leakage, but I had none before. It almost never gets below the 30's in the winter here, I might just go with it year-round...
