    Oil Pan Quality

Dorman transmission pans are popular with the Crown Vic crowd. I have one on my Grand Marquis and have installed a few others for friends. Seems identical to the factory pan, except for the addition of a drain plug. Spectra make good fuel tanks and cooling system stuff, so I'm sure something as...

change transmission filter before or after the full fluid flush?

@apollo18 I don't mean to keep bashing you, but you're still over-thinking this. No matter which way you do it or in which order, you're still better than the vast majority of people out there who never give their transmission a second thought. Git 'er done!

    Overfilled engine? Fun video here.

I've been watching Vlad and the Garage 54 guys for years. My favourite vid is when they bolted (welded) four 4-cylinder engines end-to-end and made an I-16 in an old Lada and drove it around the countryside.

    What gasket for 2014 f150 2wd Differential.

LubeLocker, then Victor Reinz, then Fel-Pro.

change transmission filter before or after the full fluid flush?

Personally I would use your method #2 and remember that the filter's job is to REMOVE contaminants, not add them back into the fresh fluid...so, yes you are over-thinking this. ;)

Off-topic, but sort of related...I notice a number of people here stating that they added their favourite ATF and "a bottle of Lubegard red". I'm just curious why with fresh fluid you think adding the Lubegard is a good idea? I'm not saying it isn't, but I always thought of Lubegard as one of...

Tires & Tire Pressure for 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis

The Grandma Keith has a 2.73 open diff so it does not need FM. The Marauder has a 4.10 limited slip, so yes it does need FM. I use Motorcraft 75W140 which does not come with FM built in, so I add a bottle of XL-3.

Tires & Tire Pressure for 2004 Mercury Grand Marquis

I found Starfire tires (a division of Cooper) at my favourite local tire shop and I like them. Reasonably priced and they ride well and are fairly quiet.

2004 Grand Marquis LS Rear Differential Fluid, ATF...

@Russian: Using a gear lube with LS additive will not cause any harm to your open diff. I like Fel-Pro gaskets on the diff cover as well. Ford specs 75W-140 synthetic for this same axle when used in the Police Interceptor or the F150 Also, yes definitely do a transmission pan drop. Check the...

    Valvoline Restore/Protect Isn't Dexos Licensed.

My crystal ball says this oil will fade away just like Valvoline's NextGen recycled oil. I wanted to try NextGen, but couldn't find it anywhere except Advance and their price was way too high.

Listen, all to my tale of woe, changing ATF

@eljefino: I don't think Ford ever used cork gaskets on transmission pans, so someone was in there before, which would also 'splain why the fluid looked so good. Thankfully all of my cars have the 4R70W with reusable gaskets.

post your latest transmission lubricant change.

Different additive packages...nothing to do with quality. It may not make any difference at all, but since both T-IV/3309 and Mercon V are readily available for reasonable prices, why not use the manufacturer-recommended fluid?

post your latest transmission lubricant change.

It should have the Aisin AW-F21 in which case it uses Toyota T-IV or Mobil 3309 fluid. Do not put Mercon V fluid in it.

    Mercon LV

Not sure why anyone feels the need to use anything other than genuine Motorcraft Mercon LV. It's available from Rock Auto for $6.08 per quart or $28.89 for the 5 qt jug. Even including shipping that's less than any of the so-called "recommended for" or "suitable for" fluids purchased locally...

    Which oil grade to use?

I used QSUD 5W-30 in the ex's 2003 Marauder with about the same miles on it, and I was impressed with how smooth the engine sounded. Used that oil for the rest of the time she owned it, running 5000-mile OCIs. (she sold it at 220,000) I think that's the front-runner unless someone convinces me...

    Which oil grade to use?

My recently-acquired 2011 Mercury Grand Marquis is nearing it's first oil change under my watch. Car has 178,592. It was done by the previous owner about 3800 miles ago. Under the cam covers appears nice and clean and it hasn't used any oil that I can tell since I've owned it. So. My choices...
