Bar and chain oil for bicycle hub pawls

I have a road bicycle that I built a wheel for (fun project - wheel works great). The hub is a Bitex RAR12 and I have tried different lubes on the pawls/ratchet teeth in the freehub with various degrees of success. I used Park Tools Grease (the blue stuff) and maybe used too much as it felt...

Full synthetic for 5K OCI's under "severe" service

I've been on this forum for a while and have seen the predominant opinion remain that "there is no reason to use synthetic oils for short (5K mile) OCIs". Admittedly this is an unscientific polling of this forum. However, many of the oil companies tout the benefits of using synthetic oils in...

Lesson learned... compare bottle side color

Got home from Walmart with 6 quarts of Mobil1 0W30 (1Qt bottle and 5Qbottle) I put the 1st quart in and it is see-through amberish I crack open the plastic cap (yes it wasn't broken) on the 5Qt bottle and hear a "pssss" and my eyebrow raises. The foil was crumpled I pulled it back and the...

short trips, city driving and synthetic oil

I am wondering *if* synthetic oil is superior to dino for short trips and/or lots of stop and go (city) driving. Also, if the synthetic oil is superior for these applications, can you tell me why? You can assume the vehicle is in good working condition and is in the 40k range. I'm not...

My cars just seem to run better on PP

Tried a few different oil types (dino, blend) and mixes. My unscientific opinion is PP makes the engines run the best. Maybe its in my head, but that's my story and I'm stickin' to it

mixed oils for oil change... is this ok?

I had mixed 5 quarts of Valvoline Synpower 5W30 with 1 quart of Pennzoil Platinum 5W30. This is for my 2007 RAV4 which requires 6 quarts of 5W30 Any issues with this? My understanding is the oils are compatible with each other. Will I have negated any benefit of either of the add packs...

    sediment in new oil containers

I took the advice seen here (excellent idea imho) of using one of the emptied quart bottles and cutting the bottom out for a funnel. I do this to make the 5 quart containers easier to deal with when pouring. In any case, I was surprised with the sediment (not a ton, but still visible) on the...

    getting it all out

did my oil today but tried something different 1) I let it drain overnight 2) I lifted the vehicle's front to get more oil out of the drain pan I was surprised how much more came out Perhaps this is why my oil seemed to get dark rather quickly in the past?

    help pick new truck

I'm considering a new pickup truck. Needs four doors, 4x4, V6, excellent reliability and easy to change oil (I enjoy doing my own maintenance) I'm considering the following (in no particular order) Toyota Tacoma Nissan Frontier (I'm liking the look of these this year) Honda Ridgeline I won't...

    severe driving conditions questions

On one of major oil manufacturer's sites (don't recall which), they claim that stop and go driving constitutes "severe conditions" Is that true, why and does that imply synthetics are preferred? Thanks

why I'll probably use synth after warranty

I'll probably use synthetic oils even if I don't use extended OCIs after the warranty period is over. The reason is my dealerships charge $90 - $100 for oil change, tire rotation and inspection. I do all this myself. Compared to $90, I can use a top-grade oil and filter yet still save $60. Its...

    boron vs moly?

Could someone explain why I usually see low boron if moly is high and visa versa in the UOA? I'm not sure what all of the elements do, so if someone could forward a summary I'd appreciate it. My search came up lacking. Thanks

    pyb 40% excitement

I have to say with the 40% cleaning claim (up from 15%) I am seriously considering going from PP to PYB. I always do 5K OCIs due to warranty and the major attraction for me with PP was the supposed cleaning ability. However, I do a lot of short trips (5-20 miles) and several cold starts per day...

why pu is perfect for this forum

I'm a part timer here and I've noticed/learned several things: 1) Most people who do UOA on here have ~5K on the oil 2) Most people do UOA on synthetics not conventional 3) Most people are DIY'ers who get satisfaction out of keeping their cars in tip-top shape and thus like to use "the good...

    stop and go question

I've read frequently here that stop and go city driving is considered a "severe driving condition". However, I very rarely see synthetic oils recommended in those situations for OCIs in the 5-7K mile range. Why is that? I thought synthetics were superior under severe conditions. Thanks

    general confusion

This site has been a great source of information for me, but I am embarrassed to say that there is a fundamental point I still don't get. I don't bring this up to start a flame war. I use synthetic oils (PP, Quakerstate, Castrol Syntec) mainly because it makes me feel good to do my own oil...

    synthetic film strength >> dino?

I read somewhere (though cannot find it) that the film strength of synthetic motor oil is much higher than that of dino. The explanation had something to do with the uniformity of the molecules. In any case, the claim, as I recall, was that high film strenght equaled better wear protection as...

which oils are good for 10K mile OCI?

By *general* consensus on this forum, it seems dino can go 5K easily So that leads me to... which motor oils can go to a 10K mile OCI? Does this get into "you better do an oil analysis" territory? Thanks
