    Nylon spacers

Does anyone know if spacers made out of nylon are strong enough to retain their spacing gap under high bolt compression? I have a bunch of 0.5mm and 1mm nylon spacers and I was hoping to use these as spindle spacers to maintain a 51mm chainline on my bicycle. I am wondering if nylon spacers...

    Bike chains

It probably makes more sense to clean a road bike chain than a mountain bike chain. Even a new mountain bike chain gets dirty after one or two rides. Simply not worth the effort vs the cost. And there is no evidence that cleaning it prolongs life. In fact, the only time I have ever snapped a...

    Bike chains

I mostly mountain bike and I never clean my chain. I just use Boeshield T9 and lube when it gets noisy. I don't overapply. My KMC x11.93 chains usually last anywhere between 600-1000 offroad miles which I would say is pretty impressive for an 11 speed chain offroad. IMO, it's not worth the time...

    circle k gas

Ok thanks. I've seen many Circle Ks over the years but they have always had an explicit tall gas brand sign with the Circle K sign only on the building. This particular one only has a tall Circle K sign with no gas brand sign to be found anywhere.

    circle k gas

Resurrecting an old thread. Does anybody know if Circle K is the same thing as Shell gas? A new one just opened up near me and they are advertising Shell credit cards.

What mountain bikes for the wife and I

JJ's suggestion to wait a couple months is good. The 2018s will be discounted heavily and you will get some sweet deals. For a budget <$800, don't even think about a full suspension bike. Anything in that price range will be junk. Buy the most expensive hardtail you can afford from a well known...

    Mountain Bike Suggestions

Congrats. I rented a Cujo not too long ago and I was really impressed with the handling. I normally ride a close to 3k full suspension bike and it took me only about 10 minutes to get used to the Cujo and start pushing it hard on the trails. They really got the geometry dialed. I am really...

    Degreasing threads

Thanks for the responses. I asked specifically about aluminum because the stem threads are aluminum and the bolt is steel. I just assumed that steel was more robust because the degreaser I use (White Lightening Clean Streak) is designed for steel drivetrains on bikes. But I wasn't sure about...

    Degreasing threads

I wanted to degrease some threads on my bike before using the torque wrench since the torque specs are for dry threads. I'm curious - what is a safe way to degrease aluminum and steel threads? I thought about using a speed degreaser and then it occurred to me it might be harmful to aluminum...

    Mountain Bike Suggestions

If the bike shop doesn't want to sell you a bike that fits you, walk away. It's a [censored] store and they will likely take shortcuts after the sale too. My shop will order a bike for me to make sure I get the right size. I would not be in a hurry to jump to a full suspension bike. Many trails...

Do bolts get weaker if loosened and tighten often?

The make is Bontrager (Trek). I think I might have discovered one possibility for over-tightening. I removed the other bolt that did not break and it had grease on it. I suspect that the bike mechanic greased the bolts before tightening them down which could have resulted in over-torquing either...

Do bolts get weaker if loosened and tighten often?

How would you know if the bolt is a "Torque to yield?" The best description I got on my stem bolts is: ``Uses M5 countersunk, corrosion-resistant steel bolts with 5.2Nm torque spec''

Do bolts get weaker if loosened and tighten often?

One more question for you guys. If the bolt fails, is that likely to compromise the threads as well? I'm worried that I may have to replace the stem.

Do bolts get weaker if loosened and tighten often?

Thanks KrisZ. As for the torque wrench, it's fairly new. I've used it a few times on the handlebar stem bolts and a few other bolts using the correct torque settings. The wrench clicked without tightening the bolts further. That is, most of the other fasteners didn't need additional tightening...

Do bolts get weaker if loosened and tighten often?

Good info. So it sounds like I should just go ahead and replace the bolts every few months if I am going to adjust the headset often.

Do bolts get weaker if loosened and tighten often?

So I had a bolt on my bike snap even though I was under-torquing it by about 0.7nm (max is 5.2nm and torque wrench was at 4.5nm). This was one of two stem pinch bolts. I usually tighten gradually since I try to balance the torque across the two opposing bolts. Usually, I have no problems getting...
