I had a fairly long talk with one of their marketing guys. There are some filters that are shared by Hastings and Baldwin. But only low production items. On the more popular types Hastings is the reatil "built to a price" while the Baldwin is built to an industrial spec at a higher price point...
After reading the filter study I thought it was the best filter for both price and availability. Very well built and an obvious industrial design not built to a retail price point.

After a fair amount of looking around I chose the Baldwin B31. I think it is a good compromise between flow and filtering. A very high quality filter.

Sounds very reasonable to me. That is well within what GM sets for the LS1. And I can't imagine Toyota would be any more demanding. 2 disclaimers:
Very dusty climates or oprations that keeps the oil above or below the design ideal of aprox. 100 deg C for most of the running time.
Hastings are "retail" filter made at the same plant Baldwin filters are made. In most cases they are a lower quality filter designed for the retail trade. The Baldwin filters are an industrial/fleet filter of higher quality.

Not sure if this is correct but it is my understanding that Delphi makes the filters for factory production (first filter on the car) and Champion? makes all aftermarket product.
