You are correct... in frigid temperatures, the computer will run the motor unnecessarily to keep temperatures in proper spec. In those circumstances, the hybrid advantages are still real, but certainly diminished.

In my experience, these housings have been tight even after 10k+ miles. There is so much friction even with the "old" gasket. I can see how someone would break the small tabs with the wrong tool.

I would assume the remaining oil would be deteriorating at a faster rate (less TBN, etc..) than if it was at full capacity.

The reason I lean towards a new filter every time is because so much oil drains from the block when I remove my filter (on my car). I prefer not to begin a new OCI with that much dirty oil in the system.

I had a dead battery that I ruined from from sitting too long. When attempting to charge it with 6A or 30A, the charger read SUL (sulfated) ... but I was able to "revive" it with a 100A charger. I'm sure the battery lifespan is diminished, but it does work now.
