I have always wondered if the 3 month recommendation was clever marketing years ago that has turned into "fact".

This may be a dumb question, but one that I have never really thought about and I'm sure someone can explain to me. Why are OCIs based on time as well as miles. Does the oil degrade while sitting in the engine unused over time?

I have not done a UOA but plan to start with next change.

thanks everyone for the advice. all the engines do have a restriction gauge, the filter can look pretty dirty before the gauge will show any restriction, the '97 does have the prefilter which is nice.

oops.. during this time of year where seeds and pollen are really going we have to blow out filters once a week sometimes. Should I just tap the filter to remove the bigger things like grass seeds.

Two of the vehicles have K&N type filters and two have stock intakes where I have been using Wix. I am concerned about the K&N type ones letting in too much dirt. Is this a valid concern? I have recently put an Amsoil filter on my excursion and had considered it on the two with stock intakes.

I want to use the heaviest oil I can to protect the engine but that 03 is especially terrible on cold startups, even with engine block heater, makes me cringe.

I am new to the site and I run a cattle ranch. We have four ford diesels, two 7.3 PSD ('97 & '99) and two 6.0 ('03 & '05) PSD. These trucks are driven probably 25-75 miles a day all on gravel roads, pastures and in grain dust. I am wondering if dino oil at 3000 miles is best for these trucks...
