    One a year oil change?

I live in northern MN with temp extremes, Summer and Winter. My Wife has a Buick Rosdmaster with a 5.7 engine and only drives around 2,000 miles a year. Do you think we'd have any problem using German Castrol 0W30, changing oil once a year?

    Oil Can Tower

When I was a kid growing up in ND this oil can tower was so fun to see on the prairie. I'm sure more oil was burned in engines between oil changes in 1930s & 1940s. http://www.geocities.com/marmotamonax/Xrag/XRagCan.html

    winter oil, QS 5w-30

I think Quaker State Winter Blend is great in extreme cold if you don't want to spend the money on synthetic oil. I have three old GM V8s (5.0 & 5.7) I like Pennz Long LIfe 15W40 when it's above freezing and Winter Blend or Castrol German Green when it's blow freezing. If you live in Canada...

    Winter Oil?

If I store winter weight oil (0W & 5W) in my unheated northern MN garage will the winter additives deteriate faster than stored in my heated home?

Synthetic for winter use?? Use dino???

I live in northern MN where we hit -30F more than once most Januarys. Last January at -25F I poured 10 differnent brands. I like Quaker State Winter blend as the best dino and Pennz 5W second. Mobil 1 0W or 5W is the best choice and Castrol German 0W as second choice. Any external heat source...

    Oil Useage

I use Pennz LongLife 15W40 in my old Cadillac 5.0 V8s, in the summer, and find the older they get the more they respond to the thicker oil.

    Pennzoil Long-Life Heavy Duty 15w-40

I have two 1989 Cadillac Brogham 5.0 V-8 that both love Pennz Long Life 15W40 in the above freezing season. The Cadillac with 180,000 responds so much better than with any other oil. In Canada they have a 0W30 in Long Life Pennzoil which I'd love to try in northern MN where I live.

How cold is too cold for dino?

I do agree, other than lots of short trips nothing is harder on an engine than cold starts at -20f or lower. I had an oil pouring party last year when it was -30 . The 0W30s poured best, in this order 1-Mobil 1, 2- German Castrol, 3- Amsoil. None of the minerals I tested beat the synthetics...

Why the change in oil recomendations

Small engine manufacters always call for stright weights in most engines used in summer. Why have many change and recomend multi weights.

Pennz or synthetic for an old 5.7?

My Wife just bought a 1992 Buick Roadmaster rear wheel drive with a 5.7 V-8 and 105,000 miles. She drives 3,000 to 4,000 mostly road miles a year. In the past, I'd change her cars oil every six months with Pennz dino. Would you say with Pennz every six months or go with Mobil 1 or German...

    Winter oil storage

If I store Winter snythetic or Dino oil, such as the 0Ws and 5Ws, in my garage over the northern MN Winter does it loose some of the additive power that give it a low pour point?

    Fine work at Jiffy Lube???

Jiffy Lube is "anal retentive" and is my last lube choice, bar none. They are over priced, bland and offer inferior filters. They do have good locations and are easy to find. I go to a local "quick lube" they have a variety of engine oil choices and you can bring your own filter and/or oil.

    V8 Engine Oil recommendation

I totally agree on the diesel/gas 15W40 (fleet) oils. I have 5.0 engines in my old RWD Cadillacs and you can tell the engine loves the oil. I live in northern MN and will go to a 0WXX or Quaker State Extreme Winter Blend for the extreme Winter months. Their is a 0W30 Pennzoil LongLife diesel...

    oil for Canadian winter?

I live in northern MN we have the same temp extremes, only more days that are extreme. My worry in cold weather isn't getting the car started but the damage to a cold engine. Any engine heater will take care of most of the problem. As for oil, I've done my own pouring test at -30 F. I found...

    Which brand 15w40 for my 92 Toy 3.0 4x4?

I have a 1989 Cadillac Brougham with a 5.0 engine with 180,000 miles. The 5.0 is famous for ring problems at this mileage. I tried auto RX and it help a some on the consumption. I tried Pennz LongLife 15W40, and what a difference. My oil consumption is 50% less, and even better my engine...

    5.0 ring problems

I have had four GM 5.0/307 engines in Olds and Cadillacs. At about 170,000 miles they start consuming oil via the rings. I now have a new used RWD Cadillac Brougham with 62,000 miles. I've used Pennz 10W30 in most until now. I am going to synthetic 0W30 in the Winter, as I live in -30F...

    Filter Change Interval

One other option if you don't like going under for just a oil filter change; most quick lubes (not the nationals) and most service stations will change a filter for $3 or less. I don't change my own oil and did this when I added Auto RX.

New filter added to my test (You FRAMmers are gonna love this)

Thanks for your filter study. Lots of filter manufacturing is moving out of country so we neeed to keep looking. Fram is consistant in all the studies and rarely gets off the bottom.
