    Ayerton Senna

He is my racing idol like many around the world, and this is coming from someone who was too young during his time to know who he was. I recently acquired his book, Principles of Race Driving. As hard as it is to believe how a steering column would break. All the facts and footage surrounding...

My rod bearings after a HPDE

Yes you guys are correct about fixing the root of the problem..I used a higher viscosity the 2nd time around as sort of a sanity check if rod bearings did fail again. Hopefully it is a useful example for those people who always blame oil for engine failure The bearing clearances were to the...

My rod bearings after a HPDE

Well went to a PDX at Monticello Motor Club again in September...using same engine with the replaced rod bearings...got rod knock this time at the end of the 3rd session. Changed out the oil the day before with no particles in the oil. Used 4quarts Redline 10W40 this time. I couldn't install the...

My rod bearings after a HPDE

Thanks for the input Greg! I have heard some talk of oil drainback not being too fantastic on this motor and so what you say completely makes sense. I will ask an engine builder who builds mostly only these engines regarding the crank passages and bearing clearances. I am still on the same...

My rod bearings after a HPDE

That is a bit out of context...you don't mention his power levels, amount of abuse, and the fact that it is a rebuild. Still, the guy wasn't blaming the viscosity. Cyl #3 shows obvious signs of particle wear.

My rod bearings after a HPDE

The bearing that spun was the cyl#1 right next to the oil pump, and cyl#2 bearing did not spin but got damaged...the theory is that a pocket of air displaced oil to those cyls first. Although pressure through the oil galley's go down as the oil heats up/thins out, you have to remember that the...

My rod bearings after a HPDE

Aquariuscsm, the 300ZX non-turbo is not equipped with an oil cooler like the TT is. If I were tracking an NA I would look to installing an oil cooler to keep the temps reasonable...again just get an oil temp gauge to stop guessing. But again, just because you may feel a lot of heat when you open...

My rod bearings after a HPDE

Well it uses the same part for top and bottom halfs..the spun bearing has metal smeared over the hole.

My rod bearings after a HPDE

These were the factory installed bearings that were never touched. I believe bearing oil clearances are about the same between the KA and VG if you look at the FSM for them. Eric, would you agree that the heat would be the greatest in the back of the block next to cyl#6? Again, I think it is...

My rod bearings after a HPDE

It doesn't call to use anything per se..it just shows what you CAN use depending on temperature. And as I said before, this is more than likely accounting for regular dino oil that shears out of grade sooner than premium synthetics. The 300ZX TT does have an oil cooler standard. The tight...

My rod bearings after a HPDE

This shows what you need to know: Link So I would say 4.5quarts plus a bit to account for the oil filter is optimum.

My rod bearings after a HPDE

For regular oil changes I put 4quarts which gets to a little above half on the cross hatch marks. For that track day I added a little less than 1/2quart. Too much oil promotes foaming because of the crank counterweights battering the oil up, I believe Dr.Kuah from SPL parts noticed this effect...

    Oil spill in the Gulf

If they don't have the ability to pull the LMRP cap fully onto the pipe, how could they manage to force a solid rod in there?

How to Stop the BP OIl Leak

Lol, the HD footage just came out...what a joke. The robots couldn't just unbolt that connection at the flange? Instead of a hat maybe drop down a hat/flange ended pipe hybrid?

My rod bearings after a HPDE

I don't know how useful that data is for me considering so many variables between driver, course layout, oil temps, power levels etc. I know I heard the rod knock going around the long sweeping left hand turn on the carousel section of Monticello. What road course(s) do these guys drive at? Any...

My rod bearings after a HPDE

Yes I have seen this. But it is also old and seems to not be Z specific although in the service manual. I believe the factory fill/dealer oil changes on the Z32 was dino oil which would shear out of grade sooner than synthetic so I can see why they want at least 10w30 in there. Again this...

I don't see 10w30 racing oil on their website or at my local store.

My rod bearings after a HPDE

Yup, exactly. There is a modified oil pan with kickouts&baffles avaialable for my car that holds and extra quart, however some people on the Z32 forums used it without any real improvements...The accusump seems to be the cheapest working option, but I would rather put together a dry-sump system...

Looks like Autozone only carries the VR1 in 20w50, SAE50, and SAE60 weight oils...sucks since I wanted the 10w30
