3rd world problems - Counterfeit oil

I have a Master's degree with a minor in English and I assure you that your mastery of the English language is excellent. If possible, I would buy my oil from a distributor. Doing so would, or certainly should, assure that you are purchasing the actual product. Thankfully we do not have a...

Latest info on ExxonMobil synthetic base stocks

We have a lot of experts (either in their own mind or actual experts) on BITOG). I'm not one of them. All I know is this: The other day I changed the valve cover gaskets on my 1996 3.0 L Camry V-6 (the so-called sludge monster engine). At that time it had over 325.000 miles on the original...

Who has the oldest Daily Driver?

23 year old Camry V6, 346,000 miles. I bought it new and it's the best car I've ever owned. We still take long trips in it at 75+ MPH. No oil usage on 6,000 mile Mobil-1 changes.

    Looking for Replacement VW Transmission

My 96 Camry has 348,000 miles. I bought it new and maintain it myself. It's such a good old car I refuse to sell it and the old original V6 still uses no oil betweek 6K changes. The transmission was getting a bit weak and I started looking for an excellent replacement. But none of the well-known...

High moly grease and tapered roller bearings

I begin not using grease containing Moly in the old fashioned wheel bearings that are to be repacked at about 15-20,000 miles and not using moly in universal joints back in the mid 1990's when I had a wheel bearing replaced under Ford's 36,000 warranty. It was replaced with a Ford u-joint (no...

    Dodge 62TE Lifetime Fluid...yep

It's not just Dodge. No ATF is "lifetime." Just use the correct spec. fluid (synthetiic, if possible) and change it according to vehicle mfg. specs. for severe service. If no specs are given, somewhere between 30K and 60,000 mile changes might be a good rule of thumb. I like the sequence of 1...

    What Makes Grease Turn Black?

You are using an excellent grease. I would not change. Those who mention oxidation (or moisture) causing the grease to turn black are correct. I always just grease u-joints until blue (or red with Spicer-spec Mystic) appears around all 4 yokes. Of course with the wheel bearings, your gonna clean...

    Locker Fluid Reccomendation

The following produce GL-5, mineral oil, 75W-90, or 75W-140 without LS (friction modifier): Mobil, Chevron, Conoco/Phillips, and Traveller (Tractor Supply house brand)...I'm sure there are many others that meet the recommended specs. All are good and meet specs., including not having LS...

    Open Diffs - friction modifier

Detroit by Eaton has a Torsen-type limited-slip and their instructions specifically state to follow vehicle specifications on rear differential lubricant, but that mineral oil, OEM viscosity recommendations, GL-5 with no limited-slip additive is best for maximum benefit. Tractor Supply and other...

Cast iron block / aluminium head, what do you use?

I do use the Green (Zerex) in our 2 vintage Mopar flathead 6's. Everything else, except the Super Duty diesel gets either Toyota Pink or Zerex Red or Pink. Ford, it seems cannot make up their mind on coolant as they've changed their recommendation again. Our diesel SD is a 2015. Just to protect...

    Mobil 1 TDT 5W-40

I'm moving towards a common oil for all our vehicles: Here's some information on each, including the current oil used on each: 1: 2015 Ford F-350 6.7 Diesel, currently on Motorcraft 15W-40 Diesel mineral oil; 2. 2015 Subaru Forester Turbo, currently on 5W-30 Mobil-1; 3. 2008 Toyota Tacoma 4x4...

    GL4 and/or GL5

I would not use the GL4/Gl5 combination. Both Amsoil & Redline (and a few others) produce a GL4 gear oil without the GL5 added on. That's what I'd use for manual transmission...and I believe of the 2 aforementioned products, you'll find most people use the Redline MT90, which is SAE 75W-90.

2018 Toyota 4Runner Drive Shaft Grease Choice

You made a great choice with the Mystik JT-6 Hi_Temp #2 on the 4 outer joints and the Valvoline w/Moly on the other 2 zerks. I am on my second Toyota 4x4 pickup. The first one (03 Tundra) is still in the family, on the OE joints & double Cardan. The little 4x4 Tacoma just has the 4 u-joints...

Top auto grease: Mobil 1 or Schaeffers or?

Mobil-1 is great for wheel bearings, but it does leak out of gun, even when the pressure is released. Mystik JT-6 High Temp #2 and Chevron Delo HD #2 are other good options. Pennzoil 707L wheel bearing grease is good also for boat trailers, as well as motor vehicles. All are Lithium Complex...

2008 Tacoma, 2.7L 4x4 5-speed manual: Redline MT-90, changed original oil at 15,000 with M/T 90 and changed that at 90,000 miles, again with MT-90.

2008 Toyota Tacoma, 114,500 miles: open front differential, Mobil-1 75W-90, GL-5. Rear Differential w/Detroit True/trac, Traveller (Tractor Supply) 80W-90, GL-5 which is a mineral base oil, without friction modifier/LS additive, as recommended by Eaton. 30,000 on front diff. since change and 100...

Miles or Time for 5 speed manual gear lube change

I didn't answer the question: Changed differential fluids, transmission & transfer all at 15,000 & again at 90K. 15K rear end fluid was nasty, front end certainly ready for a change, trans. & transfer fluids looked new. All 4 components' fluids looked fine at 90,000, but were changed anyway.

1996 Camry V6, 334,000 miles. Original engine. OCI: 6,000 miles. Mobil 1 5W-40 TDT. Oil usage between changes is zero. Still drive long road trips two or three times yearly at 70 to 80 MPH for hundreds of miles. Car purchased new and never any mechanical problems on engine or transmission...
