    25,000 mile OCI roll call

'93 Ford Escort, ~34K mile OCI on Pennzoil SL dino. This wasn't a case of pushing the envelope; it was plain old neglect. When the oil was finally changed during a valve cover gasket replacement, I saw that the oil filter media had collapsed. Curiously, compression was still great at 247K miles...

Vista crashed, I'v had Windows 7 installed

We've run into that on different laptops every so often. Some of the causes: Power Plan settings need adjusting. Windows Update installed a video driver that doesn't include the functionality provided by the original/OEM driver. Corrupted/broken video driver. Incorrect video driver. Non-video...

    What 5W-20 Synthetic Oil....quiet vs noisy ?

The only startup noise I've noticed on my Honda was from a P1 filter with a faulty ADBV. The car just doesn't seem to care if it's a HAMP, M1, Wix, Baldwin, or whatever brand oil filter on there. OTOH, different oils have different sound characteristics in the Civic, especially above 4K RPM. I...

How often do you change the airfilter??

I suspect I change mine way too often.

    Whose car takes =<5qts?

Civic takes 3.9 qt with filter change; Spit takes 4.75 qt with filter change. I fill with 4 qt and 5 qt respectively.

    Anything goes in marketing

Whoa. I'm just wondering how a filter can stop 50% more dirt than a competing filter that already stops 90-something % or so, even if it can stay in use 50% longer?

    0W-20 in summer?

Overfilled over recommended oil sump for Civic Si

No offense intended, but I'd do the opposite. I'd go by the dipstick reading rather than the OM's stated capacity. Something about ignoring a physical reading from the car in question in favor of the OM just sits wrong with me.

    0W-20 in summer?

I don't see 0w-20 performing any differently than 5w-20 in your car during the summer months. Honest opinion. You won't see any changes in fuel economy or protection at all. In fact I'm running Synpower 0w-20 in my Honda for the summer. I admit it's mostly for the novelty of using a non-Mobil...

    Remember to keep the receipts!

I don't keep my original receipts. I scan them to PDF and then toss them. It's a lot easier to keep track of (and backup) files than a bunch of different-sized fading paper receipts. My maintenance log is just a Word document where I record service events.

Valvoline Synpower 0w20 at Wal-Mart now

Funny timing. I went to Wal-Mart this weekend fully intending to buy some Edge 5w-30 as a summer oil for the Civic and ended up buying 4 quarts of Synpower 0w-20 instead. I think it's been available at our Wal-Marts for a while.

    Michelin Hydroedge Treadlife

I've been riding on T-rated Hydroedges for nearly a year now. At 10,000 miles of mostly city use they still look new. I prefer them to TTs in all weather conditions except for snow. They're excellent in rain, good on dry pavement, but mediocre on ice, hardpack and newfallen snow. They also pick...

    Pennzoil Ultra?

Great timing on this. The Civic's at 10% oil life, and my oil stash is only 5 quarts. I'd like to try this out on the next OCI. Don't laugh, but that tiny HT/HS jump from 2.6 to 2.7 compared with PP 5w-20 is kinda appetizing.

    Royal Purple Oil Filter

I bought a few RP filters during a Pep Boys coupon blitz. All I can really say is that they're built like tanks and seem to flow really well at startup on my Honda.

    Good gauge for Jumper cables?

I had a $150 gift certificate and spent it on a set of 25' 2-gauge cables with 500 amp clamps... wasted money. I think your Cavalier would be happy with 4- or even 8-gauge conductors and never come close to heating them up unless you allow a trucker to cop a jump from you. Look for sturdy, mean...
