Suggestions on Fuel Additive for KIA Optima GDI

The pour-in cleaners are necessary to keep the (expensive) direct injectors clean ... but nothing will touch the back of the intake valves and that is the problem with GDI. The PCV valve is continually delivering oily vapors to the intake runner. This mist hits the back of the intake vales and...

What ratio do you use when adding oil to vehicle fuel?

I typically use a 50/50 mix of Lucas UCL and Supertech TCW3 ... about 3-4 ounces in a 14 gallon tank. I do this once every 2-3 tankfuls. Cujet, ever tried using Schaeffer Neutra n131 to more thoroughly clean up those vales while you are lubricating them?

    Pennzoil Platinum 0W20, 2015 Mazda 3, 4,080 miles

Good eye ... I left out the phhosphorus of 673. The previous fill was Pennzoil platinum 0W20. Before that? Probably the same ... but I lost some records because of a hard drive failure in 2017. Artem, I drive this car for fuel economy ... am averaging about 35mpg in almost exclusively city...

    Pennzoil Platinum 0W20, 2015 Mazda 3, 4,080 miles

Wow, first UOA for me in years … and not a terribly good one. This is my current daily driver ... a 2015 Mazda 3 with the 2.0 4 cyl engine and a 6 speed transmission (of course). Car is very gently driven … but sees frequent short trips as my commute is about 4 miles ... 100% city traffic. Oil...

    Gave Up On Snow

I used mine a couple times ... a LOT more than last year (almost zero). I was tempted to take the snow tires off the car and tear into my snowblower, putting rubber shims on the second stage impeller paddles. I'm glad I didn't. It looks like a Nor'easter for Tuesday and Wednesday.

    Older Snowblower, Oil Never Changed

While the OCD in me would want to thoroughly clean that crankcase, the common sense side of would want to play it safe and merely clean it with oil changes ... an hour or two of run time apart. And doing those changes with the cheapest XW20, XW30 or XW40 you can find. Heck, I'd even use clean...

    Amsoil SAE 30 in Snowblower??

eljefino: ”the Amsoil could probably pass for a 10w30 but they choose to market it as a straight weight.” This is a good point to remember. A 100% synthetic “straight 30” flows at extreme cold temps like a 5W30 or 10W30 ... as Amsoil indicates. Rand: ”its' OK if the snowblower is in a heated...

What to run through snowblower engine

Like JTK and SHOZ said, even a good cleaner might not do it. It might not even be deposits affecting the engine ... but something like a vacuum/air leak in the carb or where the carb attaches to the intake. This will cause the engine to run lean ... which is why adding choke makes it run better.

    Oil Choice for

"I tentively decided on running T5 10w30 and will get it at Wal-Mart" Just be sure to check it each time before mowing until you get a really clear trend on consumption. If consumption strikes you as too high, consider switching to the same oil in 15W40.

    Oil Choice for

vronline, I would agree with your recommendations for Kansas ... but for sustained Florida heat, those lubricants probably won't cut it. Cujet is a contractor that works in Jupiter, FL and has tortured many OPE units to death. The oil that makes 'em last the longest is M1 15W-50. Question for...

    Oil Choice for

I'll reiterate some of the good advice given above: "Since B&S recommends 5w30 synthetic or 10w30, I'm curious why you recommend a 15w oil?" Because they have no idea where their engine will be run ... Minnesota or Florida? Heck, sometimes the manual I get with the engine (separate from the...

Why is HDEO better for OPE, than regular oil?

NH73, to answer your question: 1) A PCMO may have a comparable metallic anti-wear additive package to a HDEO ... but you have to take this on a case-by-case basis. Some synthetics have stout additive packages, others rely on their synthetic base oil for protection so they utilize few metallic...

Why is HDEO better for OPE, than regular oil?

Thanks NH73. I watched this thread for a week or so and while some good points were made, no one listed most or all of the advantages like I just did. Kinda disappointing, actually. dlunblad, I *did* answer the (original) question: “Why are HDEO oils better for OPE?” You do have a point...

Why is HDEO better for OPE, than regular oil?

Why run a Heavy Duty Engine Oil (HDEO) in Outdoor Power Equipment (OPE)? Their general advantages over “regular” Passenger Car Motor Oil (PCMO) include: 1) They are more shear resistant than PCMOs. Often, PCMOs shear down initially and thicken very gradually over the oil change interval (for...

Stuck oil filter - im lost

" ... I got a death grip on the filter and it came off." Yay!! Just get a good luck at that mating surface on the block and be sure that the gasket and any/all residue came off with the filter. If not, be sure to (gently!) wipe down the area until it is perfectly clean. Don't use an abrasive...

Stuck oil filter - im lost

That tool looks neat ... but is pricey. Or you can thread 2 or more bolts into those holes and use a small pry-bar to unscrew the plate. Just don't go too deep with the bolts. If you want to use some sort of pliers, go with vice-grips rather than Channel Locks. Locking tightly on the rim makes...

Stuck oil filter - im lost

JeepWJ19, I think Edhackett (great to see the legend checking in ) might be on to something. At one point, it looks like you were turning that filter to the right (judging by the smooshing of the can). An occasional tug to the right may help unstick it, but it needs to spin to the left to come...

    Craftsman tractor oil filter

I've been using automotive filters on OPE engines for over 2 decades now ... and will continue to do so. I haven't lost an engine in my entire life. With automotive filters you get a filter of equal-or-better quality, larger size with greater oil capacity which increases your sump's total...

    Anyone Putting The Snowblower Away..

This is upstate NY ... where winters can be long and severe. I have agreement with my mother and her neighbors that when it snows over 3", I come and blow the driveways and sidewalks. For that purpose, I purchased a 28" Ariens snowblower about 5 years ago. This year, I didn't blow a single...
